7-secrets-from-an-interior-designer

In the digital age, it’s easier than ever to design a well-organized, cohesive decor scheme. With some internet inspiration and a few simple guidelines, you can make your home look like you hired an interior designer.

Here are some helpful tips to guide the process.

Plan Ahead

One of the key elements of stunning interior design is planning out the various components before getting started. You can do this by spending an afternoon looking at design magazines and clipping images that inspire you. You can also use tools like Pinterest to create a vision board.

Outlining the design features of your room will also help you develop a shopping list and budget. Give yourself time to shop around and compare prices.

Choose Statement Pieces

Generally speaking, an interior designer will incorporate one or two statement pieces into each room. These pieces become the focal point of the design scheme with the room working around it. A statement piece could be anything from an ultra-modern couch to an elaborate chandelier.

Remember that statement pieces are meant to stand out, rather than to blend into the background, so leave your preconceived notions about matching at the door. While the piece should fit into the overall decor, use a pattern, shape, or color contrast to help it stand out.

Keep the Layout Simple

When it comes to interior design, less is more. Having too much in one area makes the room look smaller and cluttered. Everything in your room should be functional as well as fashionable.

Take some time to declutter and experiment with the room layout. You can use a room planning app to see how everything will fit before making any significant changes.

Focus on the Finer Details

It’s the finer details that make the most impact when trying to make your home look professionally designed. For example, adding custom hardware to RTA cabinets in the kitchen completely changes the look of the room (check out RTA Cabinet Reviews). In a living room, the pattern on throw pillows can take the room from mediocre to luxurious. It’s all about the little touches.

Build Over Time

Don’t feel as though you need to handle your design project all at once. You can make small changes over time to fit your budgetary needs and overall vision. This approach is great if you’re waiting to find that perfect finishing piece for your room as well.

Building over time will also help you create a unique look as trends continue to change. By doing so, your room will look less cookie-cutter and more professionally planned.

Use a Color Wheel

A color wheel is both the simple and most powerful tool to have on hand when creating a designer-inspired room. This device can help you find contrasting and complementary colors that you might not have considered. If you have a favorite color in mind, this tool can help you build around it without risking clashing or being too matchy.

There are plenty of apps and websites online that replace the handheld color wheel, and can even print paint codes for you to take to your preferred paint store.

Prioritize Lighting

Lighting is the element that brings a room to life. Don’t just focus on the colors and patterns; consider how you’ll set the ambiance. Getting as much natural light as possible is a must. Many designers will use mirrors and reflective surfaces to improve light distribution.

Light fixtures also play into the overall look of a room. Choosing warm lighting that reduces hard shadows can make the room look more welcoming.

With these tips, you can create a house that looks as though it was put together by an interior designer. Get organized, be creative, and add a unique flair that sets it apart.

how-to-help-your-college-kid-kit-out-a-dorm-room

Most of our writing on this site concentrates on our homes, and rightly so. But what of our kids when they go off to college? In their college dorm room, it will be essential for them to feel at home and not like they are in a prison cell. So, one thing we can do is provide help and assistance in setting up their college dorm room. There are usually specific rules on what they can bring with regards to furniture etc. and how they can decorate. Still, there is often some room for creativity and individualism in these situations. This guide will look at how best to help your college kid kit-out a dorm room when moving in.

Artwork

The classic student wall adornment would be the humble poster; however, if you have a bit of creative flair, there are other options. One that gives a little touch of class and also allows individual expression is getting some framed prints made up. This could be anything from photos of friends and family, to movie posters or artwork. These can be arranged individually or as a gallery wall making the best use of the space available, especially if they are sharing a room.

Study Furniture

Most dorm rooms come with a basic set up of bed, chair, and desk. It may be the case that you can change these for your own or maybe you are obliged to keep what you are given. If you are allowed to substitute, I would always advise doing so, studying with a suitable desk and comfortable chair can make it so much easier.

Entertainment

Young people today are used to a whole host of entertainment options, from TV services to gaming consoles, YouTube, social media, etc. You might be able to add them as additional users on your accounts such as Netflix or other such services. Even how to set up a TV or entertainment system can prove problematic, where to put a TV? Some stands and brackets can be used.

Bedding

It’s always a time when kids tend to go with new bedding. They may find that the dorm is warmer or colder than the family home. It may be in another part of the country which has a different climate meaning different bedding would be wise. Sheets and duvet covers may be needed to be bought as it’s surprising how many high-school kids still have very juvenile coverings, and to avoid embarrassment, new and more mature ones are required.

Textiles

Other fabrics that can be brought in from the outside would be blinds or curtains if the ones provided by the college are basic, unsightly, or too thin. Many people feel that a dark environment is paramount to getting a good night’s sleep, and for these dark, thick curtains or even blackout blinds to ensure a dark room. If you are practical and creative, you could even make your own giving a real touch of home about the place.

5-domestic-tasks-for-kids

It’s a good idea to get the kids to help out with the domestic tasks, and there are plenty of reasons why this makes sense. It teaches them a sense of responsibility; it can be a way of them earning pocket money and achieving a sense of fiscal responsibility. When allocating tasks, it is essential to consider the age and maturity of the child so that each job is not too simple, but is also achievable.

Here are five examples of domestic tasks that you can get the kids to do.

Dishes

Unless you have a dishwasher, one task that can often be delayed is the washing up after dinner. It’s not surprising, as preparing a meal adequately is a tiring task, and then you have to get through family dinner time. Which, if your house is anything like ours, is a bit of a rammy! So, it is great to involve the kids in the domestic tasks surrounding this, which will make them more appreciative.

Vacuuming

Running the old vacuum round is one of those tasks that is not actually that taxing; however, it seems to be a real nightmare to find the time to do for some reason. This makes it perfect for a childhood chore; it is not difficult, and you make the place seem nicer at the end.

Mowing the Lawn

Mowing is a great one, as it does not need doing daily, or even weekly, depending on the type of grass growing in the lawn. You can get the young ones out and doing something on a beautiful sunny day. For the older kids, there are other associated tasks such as fertilizing and treating the lawn areas.

Babysitting

It has been a long-standing tradition when you have kids of varying ages to have older kids look after the younger ones if you, as parents, need a hard-earned night out. One of the significant discussions is often at what age is appropriate to let a child babysit. It is a very fluid decision, as there is no legally mandated age in most jurisdictions, it is up to the parent to make a decision and assessment of the maturity of the child involved. There are other issues, such as should they be paid? Or is it wise to allow siblings to watch each other if there is likely to be arguments? Maybe you could get your teen to watch friends younger ones, and they could return the favor.

Washing the Car

Washing the car is another task that anyone can do. But can anyone do it correctly? If done quickly and sloppily, it can leave marks and streaks across the bodywork that can be harder to get out than a simple wash. It is essential to teach a youngster the correct way to wash and rinse a vehicle to get the best finish, and if you use it, how to apply wax and shine it up possibly.

3-plumbing-jobs-you-should-never-attempt-to-do-yourself

Plenty of homeowners have the knowledge and confidence required to fix leaky faucets or clogged traps. Licensed professional plumbers, of course, have skills that allow them to tackle far greater challenges.

It can easily make sense as a homeowner to do it yourself when a minor plumbing repair is needed. Try to take on the wrong type of job, and serious, unpleasant consequences will often follow.

There are a number of types of plumbing work where it is best to defer to experienced professionals. Arrange for plumbing services from United Plumbing or another highly regarded company in such cases, and you will always be better off. A look at three types of plumbing jobs you should never attempt yourself follows.

1. Clearing a Clogged Sewer Line

Working around sewage is rarely pleasant even for pros who have effective ways to deal with it. Most homeowners automatically call for professional help as soon as they realize that they have run into sewer line problems.

There are several reasons why it will always be best to have a professional plumber clear or fix a sewer line that needs attention. One of these is that a faulty repair can cause a formerly controlled problem to escalate. That can leave parts of a home flooded with sewage that will be costly and truly unpleasant to remove.

Another issue is that working with sewage can be dangerous, a fact that few homeowners realize. Potentially harmful gases and other noxious substances can build up within sewer lines to threatening levels.

When a sewer line needs to be fixed, the required work will often be quite involved, as well. That can mean needing specialized equipment that a homeowner is unlikely to have on hand, as well as equally unusual skills.

Finally, homeowners who make mistakes while working on sewer lines can find themselves becoming exposed to other sorts of problems. Should a botched repair job cause trouble downstream, municipal authorities might demand compensation.

2. Installing a Water Heater

High-quality water heaters can provide many years of service but will eventually need to be replaced. Installing a more efficient water heater can make sense even when an existing one still functions perfectly.

It will always be best to have a pro handle the required work, however. For one thing, electric water heaters need access to high-voltage electricity that is particularly dangerous to work with. For another, a mistake made while installing a water heater can subject a home to the risk of water damage.

3. Replacing Pipes

Minor plumbing leaks can often be fixed fairly easily using kits and products available at home improvement stores. In many cases, a permanent solution will require replacing a length of pipe that has deteriorated too much to remain reliable.

It will always be best to call a plumber in such situations, because any mistakes that get made can become quite costly. Replacing a piece of pipe might seem simple, but it takes quite a bit of know-how and preparation.

Fail to get everything just right and a new section of pipe will spring a small leak, in the best-case scenario. It can just as well fail catastrophically and unleash many gallons of water on a home before the problem gets resolved.

While there are plenty of other times when it will normally be best to call a plumber, these three situations always merit professional intervention. Even homeowners who are confident in their ability to fix minor plumbing problems should call professionals at such times.

renovating-your-townhome-what-to-know

Have you been considering renovating your townhouse? Maybe you’ve already started but want to know what to do next? In this article, we are going to talk about everything you need to know about starting your home renovations.

Form a budget:

One of the very first things you’ll need to consider before beginning your renovations is the budget. Renovation costs can be expensive, and you’ll want to set yourself a guideline for each area and how much you can spend. For example, set aside a budget number for décor, painting, expansions, labor costs etc. Starting a project with a budget will ensure that you don’t overspend.

Consider hiring an architect:

If you’re looking at expanding or changing the layout of your home, you might want to consider hiring an architect. There are many different types of architect services, all of which can help with your plans. Some of these include drafting, knockdown projects, restorations and additions. They can also provide you with renovation ideas to get your house looking its best.

Find out if you need approval:

In most countries, permission and approval are required for particular renovations. If you are extending or making significant layout changes to your home, chances are you will need permission from a council. An architect can help ensure that everything is in place before you ask permission; however, if you feel confident, you can do this on your own.

Determine what you can do yourself:

If you’re quite handy yourself, you might be able to DIY some of the renovations yourself. This is a great way to save money on your improvements and can include smaller tasks such as painting or patching walls. If you think you can confidently complete some of the jobs, make a list of these things. DIY can help save you money, and you won’t need to hire someone to do it for you.

timber-garage-7-things-to-keep-in-mind

Homeowners explore several installations that help them maximize protection for their automobiles. A garage is a convenient and strong option for keeping automobiles safer and lowering the potential for auto theft. The type of garage defines how much protection the property owner has and what other benefits they receive from the installation. Reviewing the 7 things to keep in mind about timber garages shows property owners why beneficial these installations are and why they are a great choice for protecting automobiles.

1. Provides Natural Insulation for the Garage

Providing natural insulation for the garage improves its energy efficiency and prevents temperature changes that could damage items inside the garage including the automobile and seasonal items. The insulation can prevent temperature changes that could affect the temperature inside the property and cause higher energy consumption. Installing a garage that has the natural insulation can help the property owner save hundreds of dollars a year on their heating and cooling costs. Property owners who want to review how beneficial natural insulation is learn more about timber garages now.

2. Homeowners Can Customize Their Garage

Customizing the garage can give homeowners a more versatile installation that matches their home design and makes it look amazing. Since the garages are constructed of timber, the contractors can create any size and shape the homeowner prefers. Reviewing design could help the property owner find a better choice for housing their automobiles. The garage designs can look like a barn or any structure the property owner wants. Contractors can get creative with these designs and give the property owner literally anything they want.

3. More Affordable Than Metal Garages

A timber garage presents the homeowner with a more affordable solution than a metal garage. The materials used for the garage construction cost far less than steel or tin. The contractors can plan out a beautiful design for the garage that won’t present a dent in the homeowner’s wallet and will stay within their budget. Since the timber is set up in panels, the contractor won’t need as much timber to construct the garage and will save the homeowner a lot of money.

4. Completely Recyclable Materials

The garages are environmentally friendly and won’t present a risk to the environment if the homeowner decides they want a different garage later on. Since it is constructed of timber, the entire garage is completely recyclable and won’t end up in a landfill. When the garage is no longer viable, the homeowner can have the entire garage sent to a recycling center to be transformed into new products. The wood is used for a variety of products and keep costs for manufacturers lower. This, in turn, presents consumers with lower costs on new products. The garages are a great choice for anyone who wants to go green and use natural products for their garage and their home designs.

5. Easy Maintenance for Homeowners

Homeowners won’t face higher than average maintenance costs for their garage. Since it is constructed of timber, the homeowner can use sealants to protect the wood and prevent it from becoming damaged or rotten. If any of the logs become damaged, the homeowner can replace it at a lower cost and won’t have to worry about major expenses that present a financial hardship. The garages don’t cost a lot upfront and stay within the homeowner’s budget. Wooden garages don’t require extensive maintenance or complex fixes. The property owner can keep their costs lower by choosing the timber garage. Sealants can increase protection for the garage and can be reapplied each year to maximize protection for the garage design.

6. Staining or Paint

The owner can stain or paint their garage any color or shade they prefer. The installation is more versatile when it comes to style since it is all-natural and customizable. Property owners can choose any stain or paint color for their garage and change it at any time they want without any issues. If the homeowner wants to keep the garage more natural-looking, they can use a sealant to protect the wood from moisture damage and other elemental effects.

It’s a great choice since the homeowner can choose a color or stain that matches their home, and the garage will coordinate well with their existing home design. However, if they install the garage separately from their home, a natural stain can make the garage looking appealing around a garden or landscaping. This could increase the curb appeal for the property and give the homeowner more value. Reviewing their options for the new garage gives the property owner better insight to how appealing these designs are and helps them choose the best installation for protecting their automobiles.

7. Take Less Time to Install

The garages are easy to install, and the contractors can have them installed on the property within one day. The wooden designs are constructed in panels and connected securely. Customized garages are constructed according to the homeowner’s choices. They choose the exact dimensions, shape, and size of the garage. Contractors can get more creative with wooden designs and create them to look like barns and create intriguing doors that match the home design. It’s a great choice for homeowners who love rustic concepts and want to carry their designs over to other fixtures on their property including their garage. Coordinating the designs help the homeowner improves the way their overall property looks.

Homeowners explore several options when they design to install a garage. Instead of choosing a more traditional metal garage, the property owners can choose an alternative that is a more environmentally-friendly choice. Wooden garages are a great choice for anyone who wants a recyclable choice for their installation. The timber garage is a more cost-effective choice for homeowners and won’t take a long time to install on the property. The installations are easy to maintain and won’t present a higher cost to repair. Since it is wood, the homeowner can stain or paint the garage in any way they want and keep it looking beautiful. Reviewing timber garages and their benefits shows property owners why these selections are great choices for their home.

my-top-5-beauty-faves

I’m not a beauty guru or beauty youtuber but I definitely enjoy playing with makeup and finding amazing skincare products – that make me feel and look my best! I have some beauty gurus that I really enjoy learning from too! I will share some of my faves below…

Since we have been in self isolation, in the beginning I definitely took advantage of not doing my hair or makeup (in the beginning), it was nice to just let go and I think the break has been good for my body. But there are definitely days when I miss the ritual of applying my morning makeup or getting ready for a special date night….. So I have been playing with makeup again – it helps distinguish between day and night (lol) Getting ready in the morning with a quick 5 minute face before a zoom meeting feels ‘normal’ and taking some extra time to get ‘unready’ before bed is a relaxing ritual and was something I didn’t realize I would miss. So starting up these small routines has been welcome and I feel a bit more like myself (even though life is so different now).

My Beauty faves (right now)

So I definitely have been making my skin a priority – I will have to share my faves with you in another post. After I cleanse and moisturize – I start with my brows. I have a basic shape but they need filling in! I love this pencil and brush duo and taupe is a perfect shade

With a simple stay at home makeup look – I haven’t been using eye shadow (which is a product I love) but I all about keeping it simple. Next is lashes, I used to get lash extensions but I have been taking a break for the past 6 months. So I have been rocking this mascara it’s one of my faves gives me volume and length.

I have never been a full coverage foundation kind of girl (unless I out for a very special occasion) – I really prefer something lighter and just something I can use to even out skin tone (I often get a touch of redness around the nose and of course some darkness under the eyes). I use a touch of concealer just to even things out and this one is my absolute favourite – I wear shade 50NN – the shade range is very wide!

I always like to look a bit sun-kissed it adds life to my face! So I always add a touch of bronzer – and this drug store find is my favourite bronzer!

One of my absolute beauty musts is blush – I just love what a splash of colour can do! I am personally draw to peach tones and this one I received through IPSY (a monthly makeup subscription) and I have discovered some great beauty finds though this service! This is one of those discoveries – I love the the tone of this blush

When it comes to lip colour , for the day to day- I personally prefer something subtle. For an evening out I either like a true glossy nude or a bolder tone, but for the day I love a nude-pink like this one from Lòreal (Colour is rosewood)

I definitely miss my monthly manicure I used to get a dip powder manicure and it was such a treat. During our isolation, I soaked it off and i have been giving my nails a bit of a break. I cut them quite short and I have been using this product to strengthen them and make them healthy again.

Inspiration…

I love learning about makeup application and techniques and I definitely have a few ‘gurus’ that I love to learn from – here are some links to my favorites…I have learned a lot from these gurus.

Dominique Sachse

Wayne Goss

Robert Welsh

I have to stay that this extra time at home has definitely had it stressful moments (I still working my day job as a teacher, I have my 4 kids at home and hubby is an essential worker) but I am still trying to find time to practice some self care and make myself feel better. A 5 minute face can really lift my spirits and make me feel normal in this abnormal time,

preparing-your-home-for-lockdown-a-guide

Getting your home ready for lockdown – a period, remember, in which you’re going to spend nearly every waking minute inside – is actually a rather complicated task. You need to consider how you can make your space more comfortable for you and your family to enjoy together, while also repurposing space to make it appropriate for working, playing, and relaxing across the days and weeks ahead. Read on to learn how you can best make changes to your house to improve its lockdown capabilities in this strange, unprecedented time.

Home Working

There’s no doubt that your number one priority, as someone working from home, is to be able to get your head down during the day to put in a shift for your company, and to be able to take and place calls from a quiet and professional place. Even if you’re not working, you need a quiet place to work on job applications, guided by the balancecareers advice, in order to get back into work for the period after the lockdown. Prepare as best you can for a home-working place in your home so your lockdown responsibilities can be fulfilled.

Activities

You and your family are going to be forced to live your lives in close proximity to one another. This means that, when you would usually take your children out to the park to play, you now have to find indoor activities to stimulate them and to keep them amused during a period of isolation. As such, you should ensure that your interiors are prepared for this requirement for activities to keep everyone in your household amused – whether that’s a painting station, an area to do exercise, or a place to sit cozily together to watch films is up to you.

Ergonomic Interiors

More than ever, it’s important that your interior is arranged so as to get the most out of your spaces in your home and to ensure that your family are able to live comfortable while in lockdown. This might include:

  • Purchasing comfy seats to rest on and enjoy movies from
  • Getting yourself a great desk chair to use while working from home
  • Buying decorating materials to help you make your home feel more comfortable
  • Ensuring that your kitchen is well-supplied and well-stocked with appliances

You should feel free to take out a loan to afford the above options: if you want to update your interiors and need money fast, you can find an instant loan company to help you get the cash together to prepare for lockdown.

Air and Freshness

Possibly one of the most important elements to having your home ready for lockdown is to ensure that it’s fresh and regularly aired. Your home isn’t used to having all your family’s souls in it all of the time, and as such it’s important that you go out of your way to open windows and to ensure that each room is smelling and feeling fresh and lovely for the duration of your lockdown period.

Use the tips outlined here to make your home truly ready for a period of lockdown in the weeks and months ahead.

summer-wedding-make-the-most-of-it

Many people dream of a summer wedding; it seems to be the ideal time to get married and to enjoy the day to the utmost. The last thing you want to do is to miss out on anything that could make your special day even more special, so here are some hints, tips, and ideas about how to really make the most of a summer wedding.

Release Butterflies

One thing that abounds in summer is butterflies – they are beautiful, particularly varieties like the painted ladies that look absolutely stunning fluttering about in the bright blue sky. If you are having a summer wedding, then you can also have a butterfly release that will look amazing in your photographs, your videos, and that your guests will love.

The butterflies are released in one go, and so they look wonderful as they fly into the sky, but then they start to flutter around the guests, even landing on them or on furniture, and they will stay for a long time too. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate summer and your love.

Outdoor Games

Outdoor games are a must have at any summer wedding. You can find large scale versions of favorites like chess and chequers or chutes and ladders, or you can play traditional games like lawn tennis, croquet, Frisbee, or Swingball.

Have these games out ready for your guests to enjoy. It will keep everyone occupied, including any children who might be present. Since the weather will hopefully be good and the sun will stay out for longer, you can keep playing the games until the party ends.

Afternoon Tea

A traditional afternoon tea complete with finger sandwiches, scones and jam, pastries, and pots of tea or coffee is always a treat, and if you serve this to your guests for their wedding meal, they will absolutely adore it.

You can take tea outside, al fresco, on the grass or at a table, and it will be a lovely and informal way for everyone – including the bride and groom – to relax after the stress of preparing for the day. You might even leave picnic blankets around to complete the scene.

Ice Cream Truck

As the evening wears on, most people will start to get peckish again. Rather than setting out more food, you could hire an ice cream truck so that guests can order what they want themselves. This is such a summery thing to do, and it’s a great reminder of everyone’s childhood. For a summer wedding, there isn’t a better treat to give everyone, especially if you leave it as a surprise and they only realize the truck is arriving when they hear the distinctive chimes.

An Outdoor Ceremony

Of course, one of the best things you can do at a summer wedding is to have your ceremony outside in nature. This is incredibly romantic and can look truly breathtaking. The only thing to bear in mind is that there should be an indoor alternative, just in case the weather takes a turn for the worse.

location-matters-5-tips-on-where-to-place-a-mirror

Mirrors are almost always strategically placed where they get the best results. Everyone wants to look their best before they leave home. Mirrors have been used for hundreds of years. Some are enclosed in a beautiful metal frame, while another one may have an antique wooden frame around it. Some mirrors are as small as a compact used for applying powder or eye makeup while some are as large a room. Many mirrors cover the entire front of a closet or a door, or they’re placed at the end of a long hallway.

A Mirror is Always Found in the Bathroom

Number One: The most important location of a mirror is above the bathroom sink where every family member spends a lot of time getting ready for the day. Whether they’re going to school, to work or out for a jog, the first thing they do is take a shower, wash and dry their hair, shave and apply makeup. Some of the newer style bathroom mirrors include a magnification portion that makes it easier to remove eyebrow hair or see places that have been missed by the razor.

Floor-Length Mirrors Are Usually Placed in the Bedroom

Number Two: The bedroom is a great place to hang a floor-length mirror since the person looking into it has privacy. They can see if their slip is showing, or if the clothing they’re wearing looks okay on them. Whether a man or woman, they’ll want to know they look personable before heading out to work. There are many different types of affordable and attractive floor-length mirrors. Log onto capitolglassnyc.com for some great ideas.

Mirrors Are Placed in Entrance Ways

Number Three: Many people put a mirror at the bottom of the stair-steps near the entrance door so they can do a last-minute check on their clothing, hair, and makeup. This is where they make sure they’re ready to face the day. A mirror will reflect the beauty of a person standing in front of it and the room behind them.

They Belong in the Dining Room

Number Four: Large mirrors placed on the dining room wall will reflect candles on the table, and soft romantic lighting. The mirror will also make the room appear larger than it actually is by giving it a feeling of openness and comfort.

They Should be Placed in the Living Room

Number Five: Mirrors are beautiful when they’re placed above the fireplace in the living room. Along with the fire in the fireplace, the mirrors add a feeling of warmth, peace, and comfort to the living room on a cold winter night.

While these five tips are places where most homemakers hang their mirrors, remember that mirrors bring out the best in any room of the home. Babies love to look in the mirror while they’re bouncing in their crib. Teenagers want mirrors in their rooms to see how they look before they leave for school. Some homemakers like to put a mirror on the table and set a plant, flowers, and candles on it so that when the candles are lit it provides a softly romantic setting. These are all ideas that anyone can use and none of them cost a fortune. Wherever there’s a mirror, it’s a sure thing that the room will look much more appealing and inviting.
