wood-bead-garland-decor-trend-love

The Wood bead garland is a trend that we just love! I used some recently in an urban farmhouse inspired model home, not to mention I have some in my own home … I love these simple garlands and let me tell you why and how I love to decorate with them!

What is a wood bead garland?

The wood bead garland is probably best described as ‘jewelry for the home’.  It adds a great texture and a new shape to a space.  These wood bead garlands come in different lengths and colours, some even come with different size beads.  The beaded garlands have a touch of rustic which is why they work so well with farmhouse decor.

How to decorate with a wood bead garland?

There is no set way on how to decorate with the wood bead garland but it works best in a relaxed arrangement.  I personally have mine at my front entry draped over some books and a Dutch clog from my husband’s family.  It adds to our entry vignette

The wood bead garland works well draped over a vase, vintage trophy, glass or pottery piece or even draped over a wreath…it add another element of texture.

We also love the look of draping these garland in a bowl or tray – hung or coiled or a combination of the two works – just keep it looking casual…

Wood bead garland also work beautifully in Christmas decor – if you like a woodland or natural look, try an extra long natural wood garland in your Christmas tree

Mix it withe some greenery to and add it to your fireplace mantle – it has a woodland look with a touch of Scandinavian inspiration.

Where can you buy a wood bead garland?

If you are crafty, you can make your own wood bead garland….

I purchased my wood bead garlands through a great little shop on Etsy, PrettySimplyStudio I love the quality and the handmade craftsmanship, plus there are even customization options for colour and also some custom tags too.

I love the texture and the shape that these wood bead garlands bring to a decor scheme…what other ways to you see this trend working in your home decor?

Happy 150th Canada! What better way to celebrate a beautiful country than with decor….you can celebrate our nation (and it’s colours) with red and white all year long….

To celebrate Canada’s Birthday –

Here are some of our favourite red and white rooms:

This red and white country bedroom has such a relaxed look.  This is perfect for the cottage or any home that has a more rustic feel.  We love this metal bed frame that has been painted in a red chalk paint that has a bit of an aged feel and then paired with the crisp white sheets.

You know we love a white kitchen and this white shaker kitchen with a cute window seat is perfection! Red is a bold pop of colour so you don’t need a lot to make a statement – a few pillows in this window seat are just enough.  We also love the mix of pattern in this space – the toile in red and white for the window valance and the rug – add some more visual elements in red.

Tired of blue for a boys bedroom? Ya, we are too! Red is a great alternative – it is bold, sporty but also a classic it pairs well with the ‘typical’ masculine palette like grey, navy blue and brown – it is used in a lot of sports logos so you could use that for decor inspo, it also works well with a nautical theme but for something more current try adding red to a rustic theme boy’s bedroom, like this one featured in Style at Home.

We love the look of a two tone kitchen – either upper and lowers in different colours or the island one colour separate from the rest of the kitchen.  We showed you a red and white kitchen earlier but this one takes it to the next level….a red painted island in a white kitchen – it might be too bold for some but we like the warmth this tone brings to the space and how nicely it pairs with the wood tones, too

With red and white decor, think outside, too

A red door (white white trim) is such a fresh and clean look plus a red door is just so welcoming – depending on your existing exterior colours will help determine which shade of red is best but there are so many to choose from …

We love red and white for the outdoor patio and seating space, too! It adds a great pop of colour plus it is a timeless colour combination, so you can re-use these for a few years…

Red and white home decor doesn’t have to be just for Christmas or Canada Day …red and white is a classic combination that you can decorate with all year long….

Happy 150th Birthday, Canada!

When it comes to major celebrations – of course we like to celebrate with some decor…

With Canada’s 150th Birthday right around the corner – we have found so many amazing pieces to celebrate this milestone. These are perfect for the home or a cottage, cabin, chalet or lake house…

Favourite Canadian Home Decor :

The Hudson Bay blanket is a classic – this blanket is iconic Canada in wool and the multi-stripes – this has a historical element too that we don’t see often in home decor.  This would look great on a chair or sofa in a home or cottage.

Paddle art set is a beautiful decorative paddle perfect for a wall hanging – it might be a bit cliche to think of the outdoors when it comes to Canada but we do have beautiful and vast land with incredible scenery and the lakes and rivers are a big part of that natural beauty.

‘More Canada’ Pillow Cover has a bit of a retro feel. We love the colours and the classic Canadian images on this pillow.  It’s a visual across Canada tour all on one pillow.

Canadian Flag Canvas  you have to have a Canadian flag on Canada day – we love this stretched canvas with a painted barn wood detail – it adds an element of texture to any room.

Canada Maple Leaf Coaster Set    Try adding some small details like this coaster set to your decor – it’s practical and patriotic!

Canada Loves Hockey Poster….  Show your funny side and your love with this cute poster – perfect for a home bar or family room!

Canada Vintage Posters   We have seen a bunch of these vintage posters and we just love them! they add an authentic quality to any room.  You can find these for the whole country, specific areas like Algonquin Park, cities and provinces.

Canadian Flag Lumbar Pillow  The look of this lumbar pillow as a bit of a country or farmhouse style.  The muted tones and the mix of textures and print give this piece some character – it would be perfect on an accent chair or bed at a cottage or chalet.

Decor is a great way to celebrate any holiday and you can celebrate this great country any day of the year….

Happy 150th, Canada!

friday-favourites

It’s Friday! and it’s time to round up some of our favourite pieces from the week.  It has been a busy week at kiki interiors and we have been working on so many different projects for clients but here are some of our favourite finds from the week….

  Eiffel Side Chair

We are HUGE fans of these chairs – we used them most recently at Stittsville Walk but we have used them with a number of clients.  they come in a bunch of colours and different bases, too!

Zak Teak Dining Table

This was a recent purchase for our staging inventory and we love it! We just took it out of the box this week and wow, it did not disappoint! It’s a perfect table for a smaller space and the reclaimed teak has a raw and industrial look bringing so much character to the room.

Bull Printed Framed Art

Another new inventory piece … we love the simplicity and the unexpected element of this piece. It is such a clean looking framed piece – we hung this over an accent chair in our latest model at Stittsville Walk  – we love art with some personality, it really brings a unique feel to any space!

Laurel Foundry Modern Farmhouse 1 light pendant

We needed something simple in the dining space – we already had an amazing 12 bulb chandelier in the kitchen over the island so we needed something complimentary in the dining space.  We love this simple glass one light pendant with a vintage bulb –

Bora Solid Acacia Wood Table

We love the look of natural wood – the character of natural elements adds so much to a space – we love mixing textures! We needed a smaller coffee table and instead of a standard coffee table we opted for 2 of these and placed them side by side.

 Bungalow Rose Zanzibar Area Rug

We love this rug! The colour, the design and the vintage feel – we have 2 clients who have purchased this rug so far and they both love it! Are rugs are a great way to add visual interest to a room with colour and print!

Sevan Faux Mongolian Fur Blanket

We love adding texture like fur to living rooms, bedrooms and even dining rooms . Faux fur adds a great touch of softness to any space – it comes in all sizes and colours, too! We also like it as a pillow.

This is our round-up for this weeks favourites …. which is your favourite?

timberwood-towns-get-look

What is TimberWood Towns? Well if you have been following us on Facebook or Instagram – you have seen this amazing project that we have spent the last 6 weeks of our lives working on…It’s been a while since we have posted anything new but we hope this makes the wait worth while…..

TimberWood Towns is a new townhome community here in Ottawa and we had the amazing opportunity to design the sales center, the model and select all of the finishes top to bottom – it was an incredible experience, we learned a lot and created something beautiful!

It was a full 6 weeks – of selecting all the finishes for this project from flooring to paint to plumbing and lighting and everything in between. When you work with such a tight timeline you learn a lot about working together as a team, you also learn a lot about working with items that are in stock! We wouldn’t have been able to get this done without the pure magic of online shopping! Stores like Wayfair, Amazon, and Bouclair really came to the rescue! We have some amazing ‘friends’ at Urban Barn and they really pulled though with large and small purchases for this project! And of course, Home Sense (to our US readers, this gem is coming to the States soon and you will love it!)

Let us breakdown what we did in the space to create this industrial farmhouse look…

Reclaimed Wood Accents:

The look at TimberWood Towns is industrial farmhouse.  We mixed a lot of great texture in the finishes but also the furniture and accessories.  We found so many amazing pieces that really pulled this whole look together.  Our construction team found an old barn (a little over an hour’s drive out of the city) which is where we found all of this reclaimed barn wood for the accent wall in the den and to create these beams (which are included in every one of these townhomes, what a great architectural feature!)

Creating contrast:

A big part of this look was to create contrast so that the wood was a highlight but the the white walls and lighter furniture pieces really added to the feel.  You can definitely get contrast with colour but you can also get contrast with textures.  We needed to balance out the hard and rough texture of the wood with some softer elements – like these white linen chairs, leather sofa and lots of pillows. We added some rope texture to the space too – the pouf, the rope on the large clock and even some photo frames with a rope accent. Another great texture in this space is the cowhide ottoman.

Lighting :

We all know that lighting can totally transform the look of any home and this project was no exception! We needed some great lighting that would really help set the tone of this industrial farmhouse look – we found some amazing pendant for the kitchens (that’s right, we have 2 kitchens in this sales center) and bathroom. We used aged bronze finishes for the lighting as they really add a rustic touch to the space.

More TimberWood Towns …

TimberWood Towns Shopping list:

If you like this industrial farmhouse look – you are in luck! We have a list of the items we purchased for this beautiful showroom.

These are just some of the amazing pieces we used in this project – we love to mix styles but also price points. when you mix styles and price points, you end up with final product that is truly one of a kind. We love how all of these items come together in a cohesive and unique way…

Let us know which piece is your favourite, we can’t decide!

white-shaker-style-kitchen-will-never

The white shaker style kitchen has been seen in kitchens for years! So is this style ever going out? It seems like very Pinterest board, very magazine and every home improvement show has the white shaker style kitchen.  So why is this style so popular?

The Shaker kitchen

Shaker style furniture is known for it’s simplicity and some may say ‘minimalist’ design.  The shaker design refers to the door style – it is a 5 piece door, with a recessed center.  The shaker style drawer could either be a flat panel (which we see in more modern style kitchens where detail is minimal) or you could see the 5 piece door in a drawer.

This is an incredibly popular style because of it’s versatility but also it is so transitional depending on your handle choices for instance, you can make the cabinet suit any style of decor.

The White kitchen

Still the most popular choice for homeowners – they are clean, fresh and classic.  White works with all styles – you can easily add or incorporate elements of wood in flooring, counter tops or even some reclaimed wood accents.  You can mix your hardware style and finish.  Add glass cabinets and floating shelves, marble backsplash or subway…you can do so much with this colour of kitchen!

This is the best of both worlds – the simple design in white.  It’s perfect!  You can adopt this white shaker style kitchen to just about any style by adding the hardware and accents like back splash, lighting, faucets and more….

Here are some of our favourite examples of amazing white shaker style kitchens:

This white shaker style kitchen is perfection – the mix of the apron sink with the goose neck faucet, the herringbone marble tile backsplash and the oversized stainless steel pulls – makes this white kitchen anything but boring!

This white shaker style kitchen has a bit of a classic meets vintage quality.  The mix of the pulls and knobs in the antique black finish gives some depth and contrast.  The subway tile in the staggered formation with the dark grout looks vintage (like something you would find in a bistro). The open wood shelving add a decorative touch and keep the kitchen from looking traditional and the marble countertops add another classic element.

Keep it traditional and add an antique touch to the clean lines of a shaker cabinet by adding some crystal knobs and pulls – this adds a great ‘bring’ factor, too! The white subway tile, the white quartz counter and the glass cabinets keep it classy in this all white kitchen.  The cabinetry style is the perfect back drop for all the more detailed elements!

Yes, brass is making a comeback – some of you are cringing….but it looks so fresh in the all white kitchen!  We love the mix of knobs and pulls – it’s a designer look and it really ups the look of the entire kitchen.  The brass adds great visual impact but also a warmth in this all white kitchen, as does the wood floor.  A simple kitchen cabinet can really stand out with great details.

So why do we think this white shaker style kitchen will never be out?

Because classics are never out of style.  They may fade in popularity but they never fade away.

So if you are considering a kitchen renovation don’t overlook this classic and transitional style – it is perfect in every way,

fiddle-leaf-fig-tree

Have you noticed these Fiddle Leaf Fig Trees? They are everywhere! check out Instagram, Pinterest, Design magazines and home decor TV shows – this tree is trending!

So What is a Fiddle Leaf Fig?

This tree is known as a flowering tree in a tropical rain forest setting – but they have since been adopted as an indoor houseplant and that version doesn’t produce fruit (figs). As a house plant, these beauties do best in temperate climates. It’s called a ‘fiddle leaf’ because of it’s broad leaves that are shaped like a lyre or a fiddle.

How to care for your Fiddle Leaf fig tree?

Like all plants this variety needs watering but only water it once the soil is dry.  How often it needs water depends on the climate and surroundings. So keep checking your soil and water when dry.  The fiddle leaf fig needs light but not direct sunlight. Their broad leaves can get very dusty so yes, dust your plant with a soft cloth to keep it clean!

Why are fiddle leaf fig trees so popular right now?

There doesn’t seem to be a real reason for why this plant has grown in popularity recently.  These plants have been around for a long time but they are really emerging in home decor lately. Like other home decor trends we see these in flowers and plants, too.  I remember when Gerber Daisies were all the rage! This plant has a great sculptural presence, the green is very vibrant and it works well with the neutral, minimal and Scandinavian styles that are really popular right now.  It adds a great texture and visual elements and adds a wonderful contrast with the lighter tone walls e are seeing a lot of right now.

How and where to decorate with the Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree?

This plant is a great space filler for a corner that needs a little something.  The beautiful shade of green and the oversized leaves add a visual interest to any room.  These look great in living rooms and bedrooms.  Try using a beautiful pot or contain to keep your fiddle leaf fig tree, these woven baskets look great but so do clean looking clay pots.  It dresses it up a bit more than plastic pot you find in the garden store.

Where can you purchase a Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree?

You might be fortunate enough to have access to these lovely plants in a local nursery or home garden shop but we have also found some online options where they can be shipped directly to your home.

This is a great option from Amazon – it measures 3 – 3.5′ high and yes, it’s real!

Another great affordable option from Wayfair – a favourite home decor shopping destination – because they really do have everything!

This option is another economical choice, you have height options – and you can select your planter style too!

What do you think of this tropical and trending houseplant?

boys-bedroom-dinosaur-theme

I’m working on a dinosaur theme bedroom for my son.  I love to decorate kids’ bedrooms – it’s so much fun! The colours, the prints, the themes – it’s a great way to really get creative and adventurous plus show off their personality.

We have decorated a few kids’ bedrooms and recently a teenage girl’s bedroom – we love giving kid’s a space of their own and helping mom and dad get the look for less – and typically we are doing this ‘bedroom makeover’ as a Christmas or Birthday gift – what a great idea!

My youngest son, Lincoln, is turning 3 in about 4 months and I’m thinking it’s time for his room to become his own.  He will be transitioning out of his crib this summer and it’s probably a good time to makeover his room.  My son is obsessed with dinosaurs and typically I don’t dive head first into a theme but this strong love of dinosaurs has been going on for some time, so I think I have found my theme.

When I decorate kids rooms – for clients or my own children – I like to add themed accessories like small decor items, pillows, bed sheets etc…I also like to find items that aren’t too permanent so in a few years when he has a new ‘favourite’ I can make the change very easily.

Here are some of my favouite items for Lincoln’s bedroom:

I love this pillow – accessories like this are great and affordable finds and they are perfect for a bed or a rocking chair (which we happen to have in his room so I think this will be just perfect)

Art for kids rooms can be tricky to find but you can get creative with art that isn’t necessarily stretched canvas or framed – this hanging wire dinosaur from Pottery Barn Kids is so cute (and it’s on sale right now, too)

You can’t go wrong with extra storage and I’m a big fan of easy storage for kids.  Baskets and bins are great in bedrooms and playrooms for quick and easy clean up of toys and books.  I love these cute dinosaur storage bins!

When I decorated my 3 older children’s bedrooms I decided that themed sheets were a good choice! I kept their duvet covers simple (Pottery Barn rugby stripes for my boys’ shared bedroom and a Floral for my daughter-I like a duvet cover that can grow with them). But I like to have more fun with their sheets – like these cute and colourful dinosaur sheets!

Area rugs are a great way to add a splash of colour and pattern to any room – so this is why I love this area rug for my son’s bedroom.  I love the lime green colour with the blue and of course, the dinosaur – I know he will love it, too!

Night time can be a bit scary for kids, so I always have their bedrooms outfitted with a night lightThis dinosaur night light is adorable – the light is soft, you can choose the colour as a constant or changing (red, green, or blue) plus it is portable so at night if my little guy has to got use the potty he can use it as a flash light

To top off the dinosaur theme bedroom … a cute set of dinosaur pjs!

I’m so excited to transform his bedroom – just a few pieces will get the look and I won’t have to spend a lot!

wall-decor-baskets

Wall decor is a way to really pull the look of a room together.  I personally love art and I could not image a home (or a world) without it!  Wall decor is a way to not just pull a room together but it’s a great way to show off your style and taste.  One wall decor trend that I am loving right now – and we are starting to see if everywhere is the wall decor with baskets.

Let’s talk about this wall decor trend using baskets and woven bowls – we are seeing a lot of this in modern farmhouse but it can be used in other styles of home decor too.  It’s a great way to really bring something a bit different into your space without spending a lot time installing or money for purchasing.

Not sure what I’m talking about?  Read further….

They add some Texture to a room:

This is a great look for anyone looking to add some great texture to their space.  Baskets have that great natural texture.  Texture is such a great element to bring into a space.  I love to see a really clean and crisp wall with the basket wall decor – it’s really great contrast and so interesting!

Play with Contrast:

Just because you are decorating a wall with baskets doesn’t mean they all have to look the same. Look for baskets with some interesting pattern and colour to add even more interest to your wall decor. This image is a great example of a basket display wall with looks of texture and contrast – the black and white blended with the natural tones is a great look and against the deep grey wall paint, spectacular!

Wall Decor Baskets as wall filler:

Ever have those little corners in your home that need a little wall decor but you never seem to find the right piece or a standard art frame wouldn’t fit? This is another reason to give this basket wall decor a try – you can really make it your own in terms of colour, pattern, texture and how it is arranged.  This little wall space looks great with the baskets and bowls on display.

Mix up Different Sizes:

This bedroom by Summer of Simplestylings.com did such an incredible job in her bedroom with this wall decor basket display.  I love the tones but I love the mix of the different size of baskets – it’s so interesting and you really notice the differences in each of these baskets.  This adds some great wall decor but the natural material of the baskets adds some real warmth to the space!

Add wall baskets with colour:

If you like this look but colour is more your speed you can absolutely add some pops of colour to your basket wall decor display.  I love the mix of these bright colours on the wall in this house.  It really stands out nicely against the white wall.

They work in Any Room:

A lot of the images that we have seen (and shown in this post) have the wall decor baskets on display in entryways and hallways but they really can be used in any room.  Try using these baskets and bowls on display as the main art feature in a room – you can really ‘customize’ the size by adding more baskets of all shapes and sizes!

Basket wall displays are a great way to add some great texture, colour, contrast and ‘custom’ art to your space – plus it’s easy and inexpensive DIY project for your home.  What do you think of this trend?

moody-blues-decorating-blue

Blue is a great colour to decorate with! There are so many shades of blue that you will definitely find one that suits your taste and style.  Blue is also a great classic colour so if you invest in some pieces you don’t have to worry that it wasn’t money well spent.

Blue is a great accent colour because it also works will all neutrals – white, cream, taupe, grey, brown you name it – it works! Blue is also a great colour to add to your exterior decor! In the spring and summer months, we see these beautiful blue tones in outdoor furniture and accessories, too!

Today’s focus is on the softer shades of blue – the aqua tones, robin’s egg, turquoise – to add a fresh spring / summer brightness to your space.  Adding some simple blue accessories to your space can transform your whole room without undertaking any huge renovation projects.

Here are just a few of our ‘moody blue’ picks:

Pillow Covers:

The pillow covers are perfect for spring and summer – the soft blue colour is light and airy and the nature motif is a great addition to a bedroom or living room.  These are pillow covers, so you can layer your ‘cooler’ weather pillows with these so you don’t need to find storage space for the ‘old’ pillows.

Table Lamp:

Lamps are a great way to add a pop of colour to a room.  We love turquoise and this lamp from Bungalow Rose  is perfect! We love the colour of the base and the shape, too – and the simple white drum shade gives the lamp a clean look and let’s that beautiful blue tone really stand out!

Wall Tile:

Something we are starting to see more of this year is interesting tile! We are seeing more colourful and patterned tiles in kitchens and bathrooms – either as a small accent (like a shower nook or just a small strip) or a full splash of vibrant colour (or pattern).  A blue tile paired with white or grey is a great look in a bathroom.  To make a statement you don’t have to use a lot.

Area Rug:

Area rugs are another favourite way to add visual interest in a room – we love what a patterned rug can do in a room and this stunning Blue and Ivory Rug from Bungalow Rose is a gorgeous addition to any space.  The colour and pattern are so light and fresh!

 Art:

Art really pulls a room together and it’s also an easy and affordable way to add something new to your space.  When it comes to art, don’t feel like you have to spend a lot of money on ‘one of a kind’ pieces – choose something you like! We love the colours in this art piece – the tones and fresh and soothing!

Accent furniture:

Smaller or accent furniture pieces like this armchair and another way to add some blue to your space without a major overhaul to your room.  We love the mix of the soft blue with the natural wood. The lines and size of this chair make it perfect for a smaller space or a corner.

Kitchen storage:

Don’t forget about the kitchen! The kitchen isn’t often a room that we think about adding decor to – but why not? There are so many cute, colourful and useful kitchen gadgets and items. We love this bread box, it has a bit of a retro feel and look especially in this colour.

Kitchen towels:

Add a pop of colour with your kitchen towels (aka tea towels, dish towels).  Just because something is useful doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty too!

We love this shade of blue – it’s a great hue for spring and summer accents in the home!
