decorating with grey

Grey is still a popular colour in home decor – personally I have always loved the more modern aesthetic of grey but it can also be used in cozy and farmhouse inspired decor.  Still not sure if you want to completely dive into this ‘trending’ tone? Start small by adding some grey pieces. Here are some favourite finds celebrating the shades of grey!

Going Grey…

We have seen grey make a huge push in modern and farmhouse decor – grey is being embraced like never before.  Grey was often seen as cold and almost institutional but now we are seeing such a range of shades and we have so many examples of grey home decor (thanks to home reno shows like Fixer Upper and other social media platforms like Pinterest) we have all seen and hopped on board with grey!

Grey Mood Board Inspiration:

I love this outdoor bench – it would be perfect for setting the scene on a front porch – just add some pillows! This is last year’s model but this model is very similar

Art is a great way to add some personality to your space. This ‘lifeguard stand’ art piece is beachy without being too ‘theme-y’ I love the calm and serenity that grey brings into a room – any room – this art would be perfect for a guest bedroom or family room.

I love area rugs that add pattern to a room – but as you know by now I’m not big into colour! I love this geometric (Scandinavian inspired) grey and white area rug (I’m looking at an area rug update for my family room and this one is on my short list). This one is no longer available but here are some similar options

Pattern pillows are also a must in my books (so if the rug is just too much pattern for you – opt for pillows). I love these super affordable pillow covers from Amazon.

When I work with neutrals (like I do in my own home) I like to play with textures – I believe that is how you keep the look visually interesting and multi-dimensional. I love this decorative glass vase – the shape, colour tone and that texture would be a great piece for a console table.

I’m a big believer in not only what light can do in a space but what light fixtures can do for the look and style of your space.  I love a farmhouse pendant and this one is a perfect blend of that farmhouse feel with a modern twist – this mix of the matte grey finish and the brass accent gives you so many options for hardware…

On a cool summer night (we haven’t had much of those) or a fall evening, snuggling with a soft blanket is perfection and this blanket is stylish and soft.  This blanket is ideal for draping over a sofa or accent chair (when you aren’t cuddled with it).

Add some stylish storage to your space – this is perfect for napkins and utensils for a casual meal or eating outdoors.  The metal makes it easy to clean, too! The style of this storage basket totally fits with the farmhouse look. This one is no longer available but here is a similar option.

Just because I don’t fully embrace a colourful space (I think having 4 kids I just instinctively seek serenity in my surroundings) doesn’t mean that I don’t like a little pop here and there.  I love a fresh green paired in neutral spaces and green looks great against these grey tones.  These small faux plants are great accents for a coffee table, bathroom, bookcase and more – they are so versatile!

I hope these grey pieces inspired you to update your space with some shades of grey,

“I jumped on the grey trend last year for my new place and I do love it but I’m feeling like tone on tone shades of grey is a bit bland and bordering on depressing.  How can I spruce up my grey condo? Are there colours you would recommend?”

Grey has been a trend for a few years and is becoming more popular especially in tiles, flooring and kitchens and baths.  You are in luck! Grey is a neutral so it can pair beautifully with just about every colour.  Here are some examples of what you can do with grey in your space.  There’s no wrong answer, it’s all about preference

The other great thing about Grey is that is works with all styles – rustic country, sleek modern and everything in between.  But when it comes to choosing an accent colour think about the mood you would like to set.  You can have a ‘moody’ house with a few different accents, maybe soft purples in the bedroom and blues in the main living space

Here are some of our favourite colour palettes with greys:

Yellow –

This image is an example of some contemporary with an eclectic vibe using a touch of yellow.  This look has a sophisticated vibe because it has introduced some brass touches in the coffee table and the lighting (so another element of yellow) and some bold graphic elements in art and pillows. We also see splashes of a mustard tone in the rug, This classic colour combo can work in a living room, dining room, bedroom anywhere in the house.

Pink –

Add some bright, bold and girly glam to your space.  This colour combo is perfect for a bedroom. Again using bold pink accessories in the bedroom makes a statement.  But you could opt for softer and lighter pinks paired with grey for a more romantic feel to your space.

Blue –

any shade will do!  You can opt for soft aqua tones for a more rustic country look, bold and deep turquoise tones with shades of grey for a more modern and contemporary feel.  But for something a bit more sophisticated try deep indigo with greys and fresh white. So clean and simple…..

Green –

lime green is fun and bright and paired with deep greys is it beautiful and not too serious.  But a deeper truer Kelly green with soft greys is also a great match.  Like yellow it works in any space

Orange –

love orange and grey, sophisticated and a bit sporty!  It works with all shades of grey – try layering your grey and add bold pops of orange like in this bedroom.  Don’t forget to play with patterns and prints in this orange tone. A great colour combo and a new classic.

Purple –

Try pairing soft lavender and soft greys with a few pops of deeper grey and purple (like charcoal and eggplant) for a romantic room – love this combo in a bedroom.  Layering different textures will also add to a romantic space.  But if you opt for bolder, brighter and deeper tones of purple you will get a modern and edgy vibe

Don’t forget to add a secondary accent colour just to keep that designer look.

This image is a great example of adding a secondary accent colour for additional pop.  Here we have a basic and neutral palette with the off-white sofa, light grey carpet and dark wood stain.  Adding the lemonade yellow and the deep teal is a slight spin on a classic combo of yellow and blue.

By layering your shades of grey adding a bit of white and/or black and a pop of colour (or two)…you will have a sophisticated and designer look in your space.

Grey has been on the rise and not just in accessories and wall colour.  Grey is trending in cabinetry, hardwood, tile and more….

Grey had a bad rep for while for being cold and impersonal.  But grey has come a long way and it is so versatile, it works with any style of decor and in any room.  Take a look at some of our favourite rooms and ways that you can use grey.

This deep, dark charcoal wall painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Gauntlet Grey looks chic with the white sofa and pops of coral.

Grey can be warm and still cool at the same time.  These soft grey walls paired with the smokey green velvet accent chairs, oversized art and golden brown accents make this room super sophisticated.

The idea of grey in a nursery probably turns many away but having done it myself for both my son and daughter, I can tell you from personal experience that grey in a nursery can be incredibly soothing plus it is a perfectly neutral backdrop for nursery classics like pink, green, yellow and blue but also looks great with the more modern hues like orange, aqua, coral and metallics.

The wall colour in this nursery is French Grey by Behr it is very soft and light but the right amount of colours on the wall and this shade will transition well as your child grows up

I love a grey kitchen!  I love the versatility with this amazing shade because it is a true cross over in terms of style.  Grey can work in a classic and traditional kitchen, a modern kitchen, contemporary kitchen and a farmhouse kitchen.  It is a great alternative to off white and with the right grey is can still achieve the same warmth.

It also works beautifully when paired with white counter tops or tile, other shades of grey and even touches of black.  It looks great with stainless steel appliances, too!

Grey in a dining room can really add drama.  I love the Kendall Charcoal walls with the wainscotting in this elegant dining room.

Dark rooms can be intimidating but it’s all about balance.  With the dark walls, darker table and the darker art pieces you get the drama but with the soft grey linen chairs, light grey carpet, light white table linens, candles and lamp shades you get a room that has drama, intimacy and elegance but without feeling dark.

You could easily have a more contemporary dining space using the same principles of balancing light and dark.

When you layer shades of grey to get luxury just like you see here in this master bedroom.

The linens, the bed frame, the furniture, the flooring and the wall colour all work together to get this rich and sophisticated look.
