We Answer Wednesday – Quick Bathroom Updates

“I am in need of a makeover for my bathroom. I don’t have a big budget so I cannot renovate but I need some quick and easy ideas to freshen up my bathroom.”

The bathroom is one of the smallest but also one of the most used rooms in the home. A renovated bathroom can be costly and time consuming but you definitely have some easy updates that are quick and affordable that can really make a splash!

Try working with the colour scheme in the bathroom instead of against it.

So if you have coloured tile – add some complimentary colour in there. If you fight with the colour or ignore it – you won’t get the end result you want!

Change up the textiles

– easy and affordable! So add a new shower curtain and liner, add some new towels too and maybe even a bathmat! Stay from toilet covers…

Add some fresh bling

– so switch out your old cabinetry hardware and add some new knobs or handles! This is a quick change but it really makes a difference (this is also a great update for a kitchen). If you are handy, you could even update your towel bar an toilet paper holder.

Switch up your mirror

– adding a new mirror with a decorative frame will instantly freshen up your space and give it a custom look and feel without the custom price tag! If your lighting is looking a bit dated (and you are handy) consider updating the lighting as well.

Add some accessories

– a plant, some art, candles, new soap dispensers – easy updates that make the space feel and look new again!

If you are looking to take it to the next level, consider paint!

It’s a small space so it would be a quick weekend job but be sure to get the right paint so let the salesperson know that you are painting a bathroom.

Sprucing up your bathroom is also a great idea if you are considering selling your home. When we stage bathrooms we like to keep them clean and clutter free but also styled in neutral tones and add some accessories to set the scene.

The bathroom might be small but don’t forget to make it beautiful too,

We Answer Wednesday – Teen Space

“Our basement was (and still is) the playroom but my kids are all teenagers now. I’m clearing out the toys but the room needs a makeover suitable for my teen boys and girl. The floors are covered in primary colour foam tiles and the walls have cutesy posters with ABCs and 123s. It has to be cool! Any ideas?”

It sounds like it’s time for a refresh and we love to hear that you are wanting to do that for your kids. It’s a great start to clear out the toys first – that way you can really see the amount of space that you actually have. Toys can really take up a lot of room.

Once you clear out the space completely so that you can see what you are working with. Also take a look to see if there are any small repairs needed. Ceiling tiles? Burnt out light bulbs? Any floor or wall damage? Take care of those items next.

Now let’s have fun!

We feel the room should be gender neutral because you have boys and a girl, there are lots of options. Here are some of our favourite ideas.

We love this NYC loft look!! Try adding some brick pattern wall paper to get that exposed brick look and feel.

We also love the large cityscape wall mural – pottery barn teen has some great options for wall murals ranging from music to sports to beach scenes. It looks like you have the best view money can buy.

The rest of the furniture is neutral a mix of grey and cream tones. This bed is a sofa pull out option, so this is perfect if your basement is the neighbourhood hang out (and if it looks like this it definitely will be).

To keep the basement from feeling dark be sure to add light. Pot lights are great because they are streamlined and out of the way but you can add some other task lighting, table and floor lighting just keep it simple.

We love the idea of a teen space being fun and a place for them!

Adding interactive games like pool, ping-pong, fuse ball and even a collection of board games is a great way for them to socialize with friends and family.

We also love fun art – it could be colourful, thematic or just goofy! We love the idea of signage and fun (positive) sayings!

This blackboard wall is another great addition to a teen space. It is so easy to do and the chalkboard paint comes in a selection of colours (blue, green, red, pink you name it).

We also love easy seating options like these chairs or even bean bag chairs. They are casual and comfortable and easy to move around.

If the space will be for everyone – find a place for everything!

This small space (this is actually a garage) has seating, a home gym and a TV area.

We also love how the decor is neutral and cool for everyone. Add some great pillows to your neutral sofa. Looking for some fun pillows?

When it comes to a teen space, you can still play with colours but we suggest staying away from your primary tones like red, blue and yellow and playing with a more sophisticated tone like navy or grey and then adding a splash of fun colours like green and orange, turquoise and yellow, turquoise and orange, for example.

Fill the room with things they like – music, movies, sports and more…Add some fun prints and graphics too!

Be sure to think of them and what they need (and maybe what you would like them to have as well).

We Answer Wednesday – Traditional art in a contemporary space

” My decor style is contemporary. I like the clean lines, simple colour palette and minimal accessories but I have inherited some art that I would like to incorporate in my decor scheme – how can I do that … the art pieces are pretty traditional looking and I don’t want to change my style. Is there a way to use these family heirlooms?”

This is a great question and we complete understand why this is stumping you. It can be very tricky to combine styles like contemporary and traditional and get it just right. It’s all about finding that balance. We love that you want to keep these beautiful art pieces in the family, it is so special to hold on and display meaningful items like art.

You can absolutely use these pieces in your decor.

Depending on the look or display style you choose, you may need to spend some money on frames and matting but there are often some great sales on custom framing so you can definitely save a bit. Just re-framing and matting with something clean and simple can completely transform the look of your piece and make it fit in with your decor without comprising the art itself.

Take a look at the art pieces you have.

Are any of them from the same collection? If so, it would be great to keep those together in a wall display. The image below is a great example of clean frames and matting and letting the art stand out. It looks modern in this arrangement and makes a statement above the sofa. Plus it still works with the contemporary look.

If you have larger pieces on hand …

again opt for a clean and simple frame – in white or black with an over sized matte. This will be an instant update to your piece. This would be perfect above a sofa in a living room, dining room or bedroom. Over sized art looks modern no matter the style of art. This is a timeless look so you won’t tire of it quickly. In the image below the white matte and frame almost disappear against the light wall colour and the art stands out more.

Some times just the arrangement itself can be modern.

We love a gallery wall and why not show off all of your pieces and their interesting frames in a gallery wall? It’s a more modern way to display your art. This arrangement is basically an accent wall. We love the mix of frames and pieces with and without frames plus look at the heights of the pieces. The one constant here is that the pieces that do have matting have white matting – you want to make sure to have a common thread. So in this case, we have a mix of frames, colours and sizes but there is one constant. This look is a bit more eclectic but it is definitely not traditional and it really allows to show off a lot of art pieces.

Another way to display your art in a more modern way is layering it on your mantle.

We love how casual and cool this look is and it is so easy. Try a large piece at the back – art or even a mirror is perfect and in front you can layer some smaller art pieces even photography and a few knick knacks – it looks so chic. You can try mixing modern art with some old family photos as well – it’s up to you. this look also works on floating shelves or even bedside tables.

Our advise …when it comes to art is to always follow your instinct!

Don’t get caught up in style, size, colour etc…if you love it there will always be room for it in your home. Don’t worry about matching – art is a creative form of expression so displaying it should be too!

“I’m so excited about this years colour of the year! I love following home décor trends. What are some great places to add Rose Quartz into my home?”

Great question!

We’re super excited about this years colour of the year! Soft shades of pinks have been in home décor for the past few seasons and it’s a colour that pairs beautifully with so many other colours. We love mixing metals in with this
gorgeous shade of Rose!

This is a very versatile shade that can be used in so many places in your home. I don’t think there’s a room this wouldn’t work in!

Here’s a few suggestions for the most prominent places to show it off in your décor.

A fabulous spot for this colour is in your bedroom!

So many people are using soft, serene tones in bedrooms, and this is the perfect colour for implementing this in your home. Adding an art piece with rose tones, or lamps would be a great refresher for your space. Another easy place to add this colour is in throw pillows and blankets.

Adding just a few touches to your bedroom will make your space feel transformed and very on-trend!

Adding Rose Quartz to your living room is another fabulous idea.

The great thing about this too is that the living room is a more common area for you to show off these trendy new additions. (your friends will be jealous at how ‘on trend’ you are this season!!) As in the bedroom, adding a Rose Quartz throw pillow or blanket will be a great addition to your space. Combining this beautiful tone with golds and rose golds is a beautiful pairing. “I know everyone says mirrors are a great way to make rooms look bigger. What are some creative ways to use mirrors in my space?”

Mirrors are a ‘magic’ piece that really can make rooms look bigger and brighter. They allow light to bounce around a room so it give that illusion of a larger space, so be sure to have light in the room with that mirror.

The great thing about mirrors is that they are also beautiful (the reflected image: you) the mirror, itself is also beautiful plus there are many styles to suit many styles of decor.

We can offer you a few ideas to inspire how you can use mirrors in your space.

In the entry:

it’s usually a small and tight space to begin with so a mirror is going to help make it look and feel more spacious but ti’s also very useful so you can do one final check before you head out for the day. This round mirror with a wide frame looks great over the console table.

In the living room:

We love that added glam that a mirror can add to a space. Mirrors serve a function but they are also a great ‘fashion’ piece. They instantly add a touch of glamour and make a room look expensive. We love this set of 3 matching mirrors in this living room. The dark glossy frames hanging above the sofa table make the room look so chic.

Try an over sized mirror:

Over sized mirrors are so stylish and we love what they can do in a room. Try in the corner of a bedroom, the room will look instantly larger plus it another great way to check out your #OOTD (Outfit Of The Day) but try and over sized mirror elsewhere, like the entry, dining room, living room…We love this entry with the over sized mirror with a silver frame and lots of tone-on-tone.

In the bedroom:

We love a mirror in the bedroom but maybe not where you would expect….try matching mirrors above each bedside table. The symmetry is classic and something the human eye is naturally drawn to. Try a ‘custom’ mirror in your bathroom:

Often when we move into a home, there have been some updates (maybe not to our specific tastes but updates none the less) but the bathroom mirrors are usually ignored. Try adding an instant update to your bathroom by changing out those old mirrors for something new. It makes a huge difference in the overall look of your bathroom. You don’t have to spend a fortune to make your space look rich.

Try above the fireplace:

A perfect spot for a piece of art, yes but, if you can’t find a piece you love a mirror is a great solution – it never goes out of style and should you find an art piece you love you can always place the mirror elsewhere. Another look we love above the fireplace is layering. So try a mirror (a large one) layered with some smaller art or photography.

Try a gallery wall:

Have a gallery wall? A a mirror in your arrangement to mix it up! Lots of mirrors make a great mirror gallery wall.

A few tips when it comes to decorating with mirrors:

– like art be sure to find the right size and be sure to hang it at the right height

We Answer Wednesday – Multi purpose furniture

“We love the idea of owning furniture that does more than just look nice. We want to have furniture pieces that we can use as storage and can do double duty. What are some suggestions?”

We hear from so many people that they want furniture that can do more than one thing. These days, we’re always multitasking, everyone is always trying to do it all, between work, friends, life, family, balancing everything is what humans do best, so why should our furniture be any different?

As much as we’re advocates for everything to be beautiful, we understand that somethings need to have another purpose than just being nice to look at. We get lots of people asking about small space decorating. What are the best items to purchase for storage and that also look great?

Here are a few suggestions of furniture pieces that can be multi-purpose, or do double duty.

Coffee Tables:

Instead of using a traditional coffee table, try an ottoman that opens up with storage inside. This is a great place to put your extra pillows and blankets or whatever you need to keep tucked away and don’t have a space for. This can also serve as extra seating in your living room if you don’t have enough for guests. Another option is to have a solid material coffee table but make sure it comes with ample storage. Whether it opens up, or has lots of shelves and drawers. Make sure you utilize all the storage you can.

TV Walls:

Obviously, most people have a TV. Instead of just using that as a media space, use the extra wall space for shelves as well. Decorative baskets, books, personal photos. Create a gallery wall and use all the space available to you.

Gallery walls are very on trend at the moment. Whether you create a modern, streamlined gallery wall, or an eclectic mix of all that you love – don’t let usable space go to waste!

Dresser instead of a Console:

Most people have a table at their front door for keys and decorative pieces. Instead of just having a table there, add a dresser with storage and shelving. Having this extra storage at the front door
can be very beneficial. You need spaces to put things like hats, mitts, scarves, mail etc. Having all these extra items hidden and organized will also be good for your mind. No clutter – no stress!

Hall Tree instead of just a bench at your entry:

Similar idea to the dresser at the front entry. Having a hall tree will give you the bench for added seating, it will also have hooks, and shelving, granting you more space for odds and ends. This is another great spot for kid’s coats, back packs, shoes, hats, mitts, etc. Having these hooks and extra shelving options will be helpful organization for the whole family.

Sofa Bed:

A sofa bed is a fantastic double-duty item. Most people need a sofa somewhere in their home. And lots of people could also use an extra bed for guests. Why not purchase a sofa that can be used in multiple situations? Get something stylish that also serves as a guest space.

Chest/Bench in the bedroom:

Do you have extra space in your room? If so, add a bench at the end of your bed. Same idea as the ottoman suggestion. Add a storage bench at the end of your bed for items like pillows and blankets. Maybe even seasonal clothes. Not into the idea of a bench? Try an antique chest. Something that will add additional functionality to your home.

Bookshelf as a Room Divider:

Depending how large your space is, you may need to break up some open concept areas. Having a book case used as a room divider is a great option for storage and privacy as well. This is a great place to add accessories and accents as well such as picture frames and books. If you have an open concept space, or a studio space, a lot of times, you lose that extra wall space. Not having the wall space to add all these extra pieces is sometimes a downfall, but utilizing the space you have in smart way will contribute to an organized home.

Double duty pieces are the way to go – you get the most out of your furniture!

“OK, Please help! I just found out I’m hosting the office Christmas party. It’s in 3 weeks and I have never hosted this type of party ever. I need to provide food and drinks (luckily I have some friends who are going to help with that) but I’d like to decorate as well without spending a fortune and easy but stylish holiday decorating ideas??”

The holiday season is so much fun but it can be stressful. Throwing a Christmas cocktail party in 3 weeks might feel impossible but it isn’t! Good for you for enlisting some support in the food and beverage department. It’s OK to ask for help.

If you do not own any holiday decor items, it might be a good idea to ask friends and family if they have any decorations around the house that they aren’t using. This could save you a lot of time and money.

If you want to do it all on your own but on a budget there are lots of fun and festive ways to decorate on a budget.

1. Use items you have around the house already like vases.

We love filling vases with season items like pine cones, ribbons and bows, candy canes and even ornaments – for a clean and simple look but it still celebrates the season.

2. Add a few natural elements for an instant Christmas feel.

We love this simple wood tray with candles, pine cones, simple metallic ornaments and some cedar branches on this coffee table. It is perfect and simple. Try a scented candle for an extra special touch.

3. Edible arrangements are easy and fun.

We love this simple and clean centerpiece with votive candles, cranberries and some cedar branches.

4. Wrap some old boxes and use them in corners or by the fireplace.

So simple and still very festive. Not great at wrapping? You can purchase pretty boxes from more Dollar stores, add a bow and you are done. We love these 3 boxes on candle sticks – perfect on a console entry to welcome guests!

5. Recycle your bottles and make them beautiful with some winter berries or other faux foliage.

We love these green glass bottles with winter berries. A bit of a rustic feel for the holiday season. Perfect on a mantle or as a centerpiece.

6. Candy!

Christmas candy is so pretty so why not show it off? We love this simple Christmas candy tower and you know what? It’s a great DIY gift for a host, neighbour or teacher. The vase can be re-used and the candy, who doesn’t love candy??

7. Welcome guests with a wreath!

Wreaths are a great accessory for the front door. But you can definitely bring them inside. They look great on walls (this year I’m adding one to my gallery wall), windows, mantles and interior doors – why not? Look for wreaths that are your style – shiny, big, bold, natural, there are so many to choose from. Crafty? Try making your own.

A few other things to consider….

– Colour palette:

Who says you have to stick to the traditional green, red and white? Mix it up a bit! Try bold and bright tones like hot pink, purple, aqua and lime green. Go glam with white and mixed metallics. Keep it simple with one hue like just red. choose a colour palette that works for you!

– No room for a tree? No problem!

Look for a mini tree instead, artificial is a great option too – you can re-use it year after year. Try a rosemary ‘tree’. Most local supermarkets have rosemary plants in the shape of a mini Christmas tree, it’s perfect by the front door, coffee table or as a centerpiece. We also love DIY projects like these Christmas tree cones – a great option for small spaces and you can decorate them however you like!

– Light!

Candles make any event look and feel special so bring out your pillars and votives and dim the lights. The candle light will make your place look beautiful.

– Budget.

Be sure to check out your dollar stores for decor and party supplies. You might be very surprised at what you find on such a tight budget.

– Have a theme.

Yes, OK it’s Christmas but what is your style or theme? Stick with one colour palette and inject your sense of style. Do you want a country Christmas or a contemporary Christmas? There’s no wrong answer but stick to that decor theme throughout the entire home to keep it looking chic and sophisticated. The best party planners plan their decor scheme, so we suggest you do the same.

Have fun!

It’s a party and yes the host has extra duties and responsibilities but have fun! If the party isn’t perfect, it doesn’t matter just go with it and have a good time, and everyone else will too !

“I have a typical, TV media stand right now and I find it such an eye sore in my home. What are some unique ideas to use as a media stand in my living room?”

We agree! While the typical, glass media stand is a cheap and easy option but it certainly doesn’t enhance the style of a space. There are tons of great options that are not necessarily the ‘typical’ option but will look fabulous!

Here are 7 suggestions for ‘unique’ media stands.

1. A dresser:

Depending on how much space you have in your living room this is a fantastic option for a few reasons. It is GREAT for storage, it will hide cords and it is a unique option to have. You don’t have to choose a typical bedroom dresser, maybe a decorative option with some detail work, or some curves to the wood, perhaps in a bright colour. The flexibility with a dresser is awesome. Just make sure that the height works for your space. If you are using a lower, more modern dresser, it helps to check the height of your sofa to ensure its not too low to comfortably watch.

2. A chest:

Depending again on the height, having a chest with or without detail is a unique look. This is also a great
way to hide any cords etc since a chest is typically bulky. There are so many different colours, styles, sizes and finishes to choose from! A great way to personalize your space.

3. A console table:

A clean lined, simple console table with a bit of storage is a great space saving option. You can hide any wires by adding baskets underneath, or a small bench or ottomans. This is very versatile and comes in many options, depending on your décor and the size of your home. Make sure that you have enough depth to hold the items you need to.

4. A fireplace:

Before committing to this though, make sure you have checked that your TV can with stand the heat that a fireplace will generate. For some people, having their TV over mounted or resting on the fireplace is a fabulous space saver as well as a great look!

5. A bench:

Be sure your bench is sturdy enough to handle the weight of a TV but this could be a great small space solution because it won’t add a ton of bulk but pay attention to the height.

6. TV Easel:

We love this option but understand it isn’t necessarily budget friendly. This is a great option for spaces where your wall space is limited (hello condo dwellers) plus these come of wheels so they can be moved around if you need room in your main living space if you are hosting a larger TV free party!

7. Bookcase:

Having a lower bookcase is another fantastic idea for a small space. This will incorporate a ton of storage and hold your TV – so practical!! You can never have enough storage. Plus, this is a great idea for showcasing accessories as well as being functional – doesn’t get much better than that!!

We Answer Wednesday – Girl on a Budget

” I’m a girl on a budget. I’ve moved into a new place and I need some ideas to make my new place look expensive.”

We are all on a budget but there are some home updates that you can do with minimal money that will result in maximum impact.

1 – Lighting.

Swap out that old dining or entry way light fixture for something with visual impact

2 – Neutrals.

Ever notice that those classically chic spaces we all drool over in the magazines are always in neutral tones? So opt for neutral paint on your walls, the depth is up to you but greys, taupes, creams and beige always looks chic.

3 – Tile.

Is your kitchen missing something? A back splash is like jewelry on an outfit – it pulls it altogether and makes a statement! So same with tile. Update your kitchen with some back splash tiles and maybe give your powder room a boost too. Looking for something timeless? We love a subway tile, it comes in many colours and it’s always in style.

4 – Built-ins.

Yes, they are expensive but fake them! find some pre-fab or packed shelving and create that custom built-in look with floor to ceiling bookcases. Aim for shelving that is the colour of your trim to get the built-in look. Be sure to style your bookcase with decor pieces and books to make it look elevated!

5 – Dimension.

Add some depth and elegance with panels and molding. Use this to draw attention to special features of the home like a fireplace.

6 – Hardware.

Make sure your hardware finishes match. Replace any hardware that doesn’t match or that is broken. Coordinating your hardware pieces will make the whole room shine.

7 – Walk way.

Even the exterior of your home can look expensive. Update that walkway it will give the whole exterior an instant boost and make your landscaping look even better.

8 – Exterior entryway.

A full exterior make over can get pricey but try a few easy improvements like paint your front door – a fresh coat of paint always looks great! Update your mailbox and address plate. Try adding some flanking planters to your front exterior, for symmetry and balance they frame the entry and look welcoming.

“I see in magazine so many people are using chandeliers in their bedrooms these days. I love the look, but am worried I won’t know how to choose the right one. What are some of the things I should be looking for when choosing a chandelier for my bedroom?”

Who doesn’t love a chandelier in the bedroom?

The elegant look they give a space is so beautiful. A gorgeous light fixture is such a feature in a room and lighting is something that can really change a space. Both design wise and functionally. Choosing a chandelier for your bedroom doesn’t need to be complicated!

There are tons of options out there, from rustic to modern, but chances are, your home décor is already headed in a certain direction. Be true to your style! Whether the look you desire is traditional or modern, there’s many options that will work with your decor and provide the ambient light you need.

If you love bling, adding a little bit of glitz and glam to your room will give it that sparkle you’re looking for. For a more traditional look, choose a chandelier with more ornamentation or decorative details. If your room’s look is more modern, a fixture with simple lines and fewer details can be a stunning touch.

Chandeliers usually work best in rooms with a ceiling height of more than 9 feet. Though, in a child’s bedroom, you might choose a mini-chandelier, since children’s rooms are typically smaller than master bedrooms.

A mini-chandelier may be designed more like a semi-flush light, which won’t take up as much space. This can also work in small scale dining rooms or living rooms.

The chandelier should complement, not overwhelm, furnishings placed underneath. One of the most noted mistakes when installing a bedroom chandelier is choosing a fixture that is too small for the room.

Chances are this lighting fixture is going to be a focal point of the bedroom (among others), so we want to ensure that is not falling into the background. Choose a chandelier that at first glance may look too large for the room. Obviously, choosing something gargantuan is going to look silly, but choosing an oversize chandelier will really make a statement in the room. It’s better to have a chandelier too large than it is too small.

Once you’ve determined the right size chandelier for your room, choose a fixture based on the room’s main color or material.

A traditional bedroom looks great with a candelabra chandelier and a little bit of crystal. Do some research. Think about what you love in your home and carry that into your décor choices!
