7-interior-design-tips-for-your-old-boat

Have you bought a boat that’s been at sea for too long? Have you inherited a yacht, or somehow come to possess an old boat that you thought was past its best? If so, this article could help you with the refurbishment process.

There are old vessels out there that have life in them yet. As long as she still floats, no boat, dinghy, tug, or passenger ferry is truly ready for scrap. Floating is the number one check for buying a used boat. Floating without leaks is even better. As to the innards – well – sometimes a full renovation is the only way. A slight problem that comes with refurbishing a vessel is what is inside it. Is it rust or revival-ready? Would it survive a renovation? If so, here are the best 7 interior design improvements you can make on your new (old) boat to bring it up to modernity.

The 7 Tricks to Revive an Old Boat

Try these interior boat design tricks to update any vessel. From a 90’s tour vessel to a private yacht – these tips can save you time, money, and effort.

1 – Develop a Plan

Before you do anything, set yourself a budget and develop a boat restoration plan to spend it. Plan to buy the materials you need immediately. This is a hard lesson for house flippers. When you begin with a vision for your new space, you look at finishings which are in trend at that moment. If you don’t buy immediately, you may miss those trends and be short of stock when the time comes to finish the boat refurbishment. Plan everything from the outset and make your purchases before you begin.

The following tips contain things to think about spending good money on.

2 – Spend on the Deep Clean

An important step in the refurbishment process is to deep clean the whole interior before you start to decorate. If you can’t do it yourself, then employing a deep cleaning company to do it for you is a safe alternative. Make sure they detail the inside from top to bottom. Once this task is complete and the tech and engine get an update, you can finally start to get down to designing business.

3 – Update the Seating

In some cases, replacement boat seat cushions can make a huge difference to the boat’s interior. Every boat, be it high end or trawler, has a seating area in it. These seating areas gather dust, bacteria, and spills. Ripping the cushioning out and starting again is an efficient way to solve the problem. Complete the look with new cushion covers and you have a whole new room. Check out the African Mud Cloth trend for inspiration.

4 – Budget for Home Comforts

The whole point in all this is to make your new, inherited, or refurbished boat, feel like your own. Prepare to spend a large chunk of your budget buying the digital devices, electronics, and luxury touches that you need to make it feel like your floating home. Think of functionality and of little luxuries. If you’re going to perform a refurbishment, you might as well make it high end.

5 – Match Your Fabrics

You can soften up the hard edges found in vessels by choosing fabric with a distinguished pattern, picking out colors from feature furniture to add to individual pieces around the space, or mixing up soft fabrics which complement one another. Mix your textures but match your palette – just as if you were designing your home.

6 – Use Lighting for Atmosphere

Not all boats have walls. This can make the decorating a little difficult. If you have exposed industrial metal and wooden finishings to work with, add a little brass around and light it with LED strips, your choice in colors, or even specially made spot lighting, if you can afford it. Lighting adds atmosphere on board, and if you surround yourself with soft fabrics, you could feel right at home.

7 – Use Tapestries

Instead of spending a small fortune designing the interior of a boat which may or may not have walls to hang paper on, try tapestries, instead. Decorating the living spaces with soft fabrics takes the edge off all that industrial steel. Not only that, it adds to the insulation, which you really need on open water.

If it Floats, it Bloats!

If your new investment doesn’t have balance issues, engine issues, or leaks, you can get some life out of it yet. Especially if you followed our advice.

african-mud-cloth-trend

This year the trend in pattern and textile is African Mud cloth and personally, I love it! I’m a big fan of neutrals but I also love the organic element of this textile….

So what is ‘African Mud cloth’?

Originating in Mali – African Mud Cloth is a handmade Malian cotton which is dyed using a fermented mud. the patterns have meaning, too. There are various symbols and in each design the symbols are used to tell a story.  So each piece is unique and has a story to tell – which I feel is one reason why this textile is so attractive and interesting. Similar to the trend of Scandinavian inspired rugs that we saw everywhere last year – African Mud cloth has a simple pattern with visual interest…

Inspiration …..

I feel the best way to embrace this trend is will pillows – because they are neutral and so simple they will work with most decor styles. Try adding this organic element to your Farmhouse decor or add these neutral patterns to your modern space to add some warmth.

I love how the black mud cloth pillow acts like an anchor in this modern meets rustic entry. It has an organic connection with the wood and it echoes the black lighting and the gallery wall.

Shop African Mud cloth…

Next on my shopping list (or wish list) are some pillows to add to my Master bedroom which is in need of an update (I will be sure to blog about that makeover when the time comes….) I love that you can update your current pillows with some covers.  No need to store additional pillows plus it makes updating your space much more affordable. Here are some great finds and many of them come in sets which makes it even easier……

Set of 4 African Mudcloth pillow covers 18 x 18

African Mudcloth 16 x 16 pillow cover

Set of 3 African Mudcloth pillow covers (various sizes)

What do you think of this trend?

home-styling-tips-and-tricks

Have you ever visited a furniture store show room or model home and thought – wow, why doesn’t my home look like this?

Well it can!  Follow these home styling tips and tricks and your home will instantly look chic and polished.  The details really do matter….

1 –  Always use odd numbers in your displays –

They are more visually appealing.  The photos just below and to the right illustrate 3 items used in the display. The books (one item) all count as one object visually as that is how your eye will read the grouping. Also note coordinating colours, different textures and height – not necessary as it really depends on the style but for this shabby country chic space the texture and tones work.

2 – Items do not have to be centered on the coffee table –

If you are planning on using it, put your feet up or set down a glass, move your display off center to a corner.  It will still look great. Style and function can work hand in hand

3- Do not place anything too high on the coffee table –

People should be able to see each other across the space. A little height is nice like a beautiful orchid for instance, just don’t have anything bulky and tall

4- The edge of the rug in your living room –

Should start just under the front legs of your couch and chairs. A 5 x 8 rug works perfectly in most spaces but you can go larger depending on the size of your room.

5 –  A console table in the back of the couch  –

Should never be higher than the back of the couch (otherwise you will most likely bang your head on it when you flop down on the couch at the end of a long day).

6-  End tables should be the same height as the arms of the couch or chair –

Too low and a guest will be likely to drop their drink and too high they will bump the side of the table with the glass.

7-  Use pillow inserts and covers

So you can change the decor out seasonally. It will save you money and allow you to constantly refresh your space.

8 –  Mix and match textures and shapes for interest –

Notice the different textures in the photo above and the throw – that also counts as a layer. Plus they add great visual interest to a room and are any easy fix when you want something new and fresh

9- When layering your pillows, start with the 20 x 20 in the back then go progressively smaller –

Use more pillows in the corner of a sectional to provide more back support.

We’d love to know how these home styling tips and tricks transform the look of your home…
