7-types-of-damage-squirrels-can-inflict-on-your-house

Countless individuals find squirrels to be cute animals. The little faces and bushy tails make them fun to watch as they go about their busy lives. However, when a squirrel makes its way into the home, problems quickly ensue. The homeowner must act quickly to prevent damage to the residence, as repairing this damage can be costly.

#1 Wood

Squirrels chew wood anywhere they find it in the home. The siding, doors, and more are at risk when a squirrel gains access to a residence. In fact, a squirrel can chew a hole four inches in diameter to access the attic. This hole then allows other animals to enter the residence while putting the house at risk for substantial damage. Call for help at Animal Control Specialists to ensure this damage is prevented or kept to a minimum.

#2 Shingles

Wood isn’t the only thing at risk of damage. While the wood that supports the shingles may be damaged by squirrels, the shingles themselves are also at risk. If the squirrel does enough damage to the shingles, rain can lead to water damage. The homeowner needs to address the situation promptly to prevent this from happening.

#3 Wiring

Squirrels love hiding in the attics of home. Unfortunately, this is where many homes hide the electrical wiring that powers the house. When a squirrel encounters electrical wires, it will likely chew them. In fact, the damage to wires caused by pests remains one of the biggest dangers a homeowner must be aware of. When wires are exposed, the risk of an electrical fire increases significantly, putting the home and its occupants at risk.

#4 Plastic

People often don’t think a squirrel can damage plastic only to learn how wrong they are. Squirrels harm outdoor furniture, PVC pipes, and more if the homeowner doesn’t act when they spot them around these items. Sadly, squirrels in a home can damage water pipes. When they do, a leak develops that can do significant damage to the home in little time.

#5 Insulation

Squirrels find insulation to be an excellent nesting material and will use the insulation in an attic to make a nest. When they trample and shred the insulation to use in the nest, the material loses its effectiveness. A homeowner will often find they need to replace the insulation to keep the home at a comfortable temperature.

#6 Health

When one thinks of damage squirrels can do to a home, they often think of the structure. However, squirrels may also harm the health of those who live in the home, and this danger cannot be overlooked. Individuals and pets who come into contact with rodent feces or urine may contract salmonella. In addition, squirrels carry fleas that may be transmitted to pets or introduced into the home.

#7 Chimneys

Squirrels often explore uncharted territory. When they make their way into a chimney, they might find they cannot escape. This could lead to problems when the homeowner lights a fire in a fireplace or wood stove. The smoke may enter the residence, as it cannot move up the flue as intended. In addition, a chimney fire could occur and bring about costly damage.

If you suspect you have unwanted visitors in your attic or anywhere in the home, call a pest control specialist immediately. Untrained individuals should not attempt to remove their unwanted guests. Leave this task to the pros and enjoy peace of mind knowing the pests have been evicted.

open-concept-home-what-is-a-barndominium

Many people remain unaware of an option open to them when they choose to build a home. However, the barndominium is an excellent choice for a variety of reasons. Don’t let the nickname barndo fool you or the fact that this housing option was created to allow caretakers to stay close to their animals. Today, it serves as the perfect solution for many people wishing to buy a home and design it the way they want.

The Benefits of a Bardominium

The Barndominium works for a range of housing styles, including vacation rentals and luxury homes. What makes this the perfect residence in upscale rural areas known for their vineyards and expansive ranches? Why would a person wish to invest in a residence that is unlike anything they are familiar with in terms of the building methods used? These serve as only a few of the countless questions a person may have before deciding if this option is right for their needs.

Customization

When a person chooses to construct a barndo, they find they have countless options available to them. The building often comes as nothing more than a shell with basic framing on the interior. As a result, the owner finds they can finish the interior however they desire. One person might want an open floor plan that allows the interior to be wide open other than bedrooms and bathrooms. Another individual may choose to have separate areas for each part of their daily life. It’s all a matter of what the owner wants and needs when it comes to the residence, as no two families are alike.

Furthermore, companies now offer a do-it-yourself option that every potential buyer should consider. The construction team handles the basic tasks. They construct the metal shell, hook up the utilities, and handle tasks such as putting up the drywall. Once this work is complete, they turn the home over to the new owner. This individual then handles all of the remaining details, such as choosing the flooring and fixtures before having them installed. This ensures the home meets the owner’s needs and wishes in every way.

Construction

People find they must wait months to have their new residence inhabitable when they choose to build from the ground up using conventional building methods. That isn’t the case when a person opts for a barndominium. Experienced crews can have the metal shell construction up in a fraction of the time. The homeowner can then take as long as they want or need to complete the interior of the residence. Doing so ensures the home is everything the owner dreamed of when starting the project and remains within their budget at the same time. They finish the home as money allows to ensure they get the perfect residence in every way.

Durability

The metal used to create a barndo ensures the residence will last for decades. In fact, these materials come with a longer lifespan than conventional building materials. Homeowners know they are making an investment in the future that will provide a nice return on investment in the coming years.

Flexibility

One reason people love barndos is the structure can be used as a home or combine elements of both a workplace and living space. It’s all a matter of what the individual wants and needs from their residence. As more people work from home today than ever before, it’s no wonder they are taking a second look at the barndominium option.

Furthermore, potential buyers find they can create a home that allows them to enjoy both indoor and outdoor living. They select those features that will be of most benefit to them. For example, one person might wish to have a rollup door on their residence to accommodate their classic car collection. Another buyer could select oversized windows throughout the home to enjoy the beauty of the landscape even when they must stay indoors.

Creating the Perfect Residence

When designing a barndominium, individuals find they have flexibility. While certain rooms must be situated a particular way to accommodate utilities, the majority of the interior layout can be customized to meet the needs of the owner. Experts recommend planning the home around the way each room will be used.

Once the square footage of the barndominium has been decided, it’s time to begin planning the interior. Many barndos feature a main living area with a loft area above this space. To ensure the home feels open and welcoming, many individuals opt for large windows and a wraparound deck. However, these serve as only two of the countless ways the barndo can be designed for the specific individual or family who will live there.

Finishing the Barndominium

When the time comes to finish the interior of the residence, experts offer some advice that will benefit any new homeowner. They explain that color serves as the best way to make the house a home. When the residence contains a large, open space, add a colorful stripe that extends around the perimeter of the room. Doing so provides the area with an intimate feel. Countless individuals opt for an accent wall, as this helps provide the large open space with a focal point, and homeowners should consider making the ceiling the accent wall.

Large furnishings serve as the perfect pieces for barndominiums. These furnishings include oversized chairs and sectionals, among other things. When placing the furniture, group pieces together to distinguish different living spaces. Many people tend to arrange their furniture in a way that leaves the residence looking like a furniture store. Using this technique that can be avoided.

Allow the furnishings to tie the different areas of the home together. A single color palette across the different spaces serves as a great way to accomplish this goal. If you are concerned about becoming bored with this color, choose a neutral palette. By doing so, you can change up the look of the space simply by changing accessories in the different rooms. Add some new throw pillows or choose lamps in a different color to achieve this goal.

Area rugs serve as another great way to separate different living spaces in an open concept home. The rugs help to define the different areas and separate them. Again, try to keep the rugs in the same color palette for a look others will envy.

Barndominiums serve as a great option for individuals looking to build a home. Speak to a builder today to learn whether this option meets your needs. Many people find it is exactly what they want for their new residence, as these structures have so much to offer.

how-to-install-a-bathroom-vanity-in-8-steps

There are plenty of reasons to install a new bathroom vanity. A new vanity can provide more storage or counter space, change the look of the bathroom, and make it easier for residents to get ready for their days. Plus, for handy homeowners with all the right tools and experience, installing a bathroom vanity is a relatively simple one-day project that can be completed in just eight steps.

1. Measure Twice

Whether homeowners are remodeling existing bathrooms or adding new ones, the best place to start is obtaining accurate measurements. As with all home improvement projects, accurate measurements are absolutely essential.

2. Choose a New Vanity

There are numerous vanity types to choose from, so it’s easy for homeowners to find themselves feeling overwhelmed. When shopping for a new vanity, it’s best to focus on the counter and storage space. Hardware such as faucets and door handles can always be replaced.

3. Remove the Old Vanity

This third step is where things start to get a little tricky. Homeowners who aren’t very strong or don’t have the right tools can visit Express-Handyman.com to get help with the rest of the process. Otherwise, follow these steps in removing the vanity to avoid plumbing disasters:

Shut off the water supply

Loosen the slip nut

Disconnect the supply lines

Cut the sealant

Remove the counter

Remove the sink top

Disconnect the vanity from the wall

Dispose of everything properly

4. Place the New Vanity

Some vanities are easier to install than others, but all require leveling and careful placement. Place the vanity in its future position and trace the outline on the wall before using a stud finder and marking the studs. Once the vanity is level, mark the holes for screws and water pipes.

5. Complete the Vanity Installation

Use three-inch drywall screws to attach the vanity to the wall through the pre-drilled holes. Some homeowners also like to use wall anchors for a more secure installation. Once the vanity is attached to the wall, install shims and, if necessary, quarter-round molding to cover large gaps.

6. Install the Plumbing

Place the gasket on the faucet and screw on fastening nuts, then insert it into the designated hole in the vanity top. Next, attach the water supply lines and the drain pipe using an adjustable wrench. Keep in mind that this step is easiest if homeowners assemble the faucets and drains before attaching the sink.

7. Attach the Vanity Top

Start by making sure there are no gaps between the vanity and the wall. Next, apply caulk to the top of the vanity base, then set the top into position and press down. Check again to make sure the top is level and flush with the wall, then add a backsplash, if necessary, once everything is in its final place.

8. Reconnect the Plumbing

Finally, connect the faucet water supply lines and reconnect the P-trap to the drain. Test the sink and plumbing for leaks before installing the pop-up drain, then sit back and relax. As long as there are no leaks, the project is done.

An Easier Alternative

If it sounds like installing a new vanity is a lot of work, that’s because it is. Homeowners who don’t have the time to tackle bathroom renovations can always hire a handyman. Handyman services offer an affordable and far more convenient solution than undertaking DIY projects alone.

definite-signs-of-a-pest-infestation-you-need-to-know

Experiencing a pest infestation can be an absolute nightmare for anyone, especially when considering that most infestations go unnoticed until they have already spiraled out of control. More often than not, homeowners simply don’t notice the signs of an infestation, as it’s not always that easy to tell if you have a pest problem.

Unfortunately, pest control measures are vital whether you are a homeowner or a tenant because pests can do expensive property damage and are a substantial risk to our health. But beyond that, infestations can also be downright embarrassing and repugnant, to say the least.

So, if you’re searching for ways to ensure you never have to deal with the true horror of a full-on infestation, the best approach is to know the signs to look for. And we’ve listed them for you.

Actual Sightings

One blatant sign of an infestation is seeing the critter roaming about your property with your own eyes. This is relevant to all types of pests, from brown recluse spiders and cockroaches to rats, snakes, and everything else.

But when it comes to creepy poisonous snakes and spiders, the risk is amplified as these pests are a significant health concern.

Signs of brown recluse infestation include actual sightings, so if you happen to see this poisonous spider lurking in your home, you should consult a pest control service, use eucalyptus as a repellent, and fill cracks and crevices where spiders might be hiding.

Damaged Plants

Household pests are not your only concern if you have a garden area on your property; a variety of pests can infest your yard and do extensive damage to the vegetation and property value at the same time. What’s more, some outdoor pests can even damage the exterior of your home.

So, while getting rid of weeds and maintaining the yard, be sure to check for signs of plant damage. In addition, if you happen to see pests or notice nests, you should implement pest control measures to clear your yard of pesky troublemakers.

Dropping Or Body Parts

Household pests tend to leave two things behind as they trail through homes; dropping and body parts. Suppose you notice droppings in areas such as crawl spaces, the attic, basement, or any other room of your home where they can casually roam about without being interrupted much. In that case, you should contact exterminators right away.

That said, the more considerable the number of droppings visible, the worse the infestation is.

Strange Odors

If your home is infested, you’ll likely be experiencing some odd smells, too. The stench of stale or rotten food is one such strange odor that is associated with pest infestations.

Holes And Gnaw Marks

Rats and mice are the common culprits behind mysterious holes and gnaw marks in furnishings and walls of homes worldwide. These pesky critters are known-disease carriers, which makes them most unwelcome in our homes.

Other signs of an infestation include things like damage to fabrics, strange sounds, misplaced objects, and a build-up of dirt and grime.

And when it comes to the important task of keeping pests out, prevention measures should be installed by a professional service while keeping your home clean is another significant way to prevent welcoming troubles into your home.

five-ways-to-get-the-right-mindset-when-working-from-home

The office is a great help in getting into the right mindset for working. You go in, sit at your desk, and you’re away!

But this can change when you need to work from home. All of a sudden you don’t have the right surroundings or environment to get your head in work-mode. Before you know it, you’re watching Game of Thrones, reading the news and completely forgetting about work.

So, to help you avoid this, here are five really effective ways to get into the right mindset when working from home.

1. Remove all distractions

Just like at the office, you need to get rid of all distractions and things that will tempt you to do something else. This means turning off the television and putting your phone on silent.

The temptation to get up and do something else can be very strong. So, to help you with this, it is recommended that you block out a certain amount of time for work, and then work for that amount of time and no more.

You can also:

  • Close all your social media accounts (except for work related ones).
  • Turn off the TV.
  • Tell family members your working hours.

2. Set up a dedicated workspace

If you can set up a dedicated workspace at home, then do it! Even if you can’t, try and make your home office as clean, tidy and presentable as possible. This will help you to feel like you’ve really got something to work with, and will give you a real boost of motivation.

It will also be beneficial if you can work from the same place every day. This will help you build a routine, which makes it easier to achieve the right mindset for work

But if you do have to work from other areas around the house, try to keep one thing consistent. You might find it helpful to wear your work clothes, sit in the same chair, or even listen to a radio show every day.

3. Get the correct equipment and furniture

As well as working from the same place every day, it’s also really important to have the correct equipment and furniture for your work space. If you are able to, invest in similar furnishings and equipment that you would use in your office. This will really get you in the working mindset and will motivate you to do more.

Some of the furniture you will need include:

  • A decent desk – if you can afford it, a desk with adjustable height can really improve your productivity. Stand up reading desks, for example, are really good for letting you move around easily and keep you fit!
  • A comfortable chair – use this chair when you need to relax, and make sure it’s somewhere where you can sit for a long time without feeling uncomfortable.
  • A small coffee table – this is great for putting your notes, laptop and other things on.
  • A few shelves – these are great for storing stationary, resources, and other things you might need.

Make sure your work area is clean, tidy and clutter-free. This will make it easier to be in the right mindset for working. Invest in some storage solutions for your desk, and try and make a nice, comfortable space for you to work in.

4. Background noise can be helpful

Background noise can be a good thing. If you are working from home, try and play some kind of calming music in the background. This will help to block out any noise from the rest of the household. You can also try the radio, or even the TV if you’re working late at night.

However, make sure the music, radio or TV is not distracting or loud enough to take your attention from your work. You can use headphones, or put the radio or TV on in another room.

5. Use the right lighting

The right lighting can really help you to get into the right mindset for work. Remove any lamps or other light sources that might distract you. Try using daylight instead. You might find it helpful to open the blinds, or even open the windows.

Using daylight is really good for your concentration. It also helps you to feel like you’re at the office, and will give you a sense of normality. If you find it hard to concentrate with daylight, then try using a desk lamp.

By using the right lighting, you will feel like you’re at the office; this might even give you a sense of normality.

To Sum Up…

Working from home is a great way to make extra money, but it’s not easy. You need to be in the right mindset to be able to work, and to make sure you get the job done.

So, make sure you remove all distractions, use the right equipment, have the right furniture, and make sure the lighting is right. All of this will help you to be in the right mindset for working and get the job done.

how-to-do-a-diy-renovation-of-your-kitchen-on-a-budget

There comes a point in every homeowner’s life when the kitchen starts to look a bit dated. If you are on a strict budget then you may feel like you just have to live with it since kitchen renovations can be so expensive. The problem is that a dated kitchen will eventually be one that is not very usable as things progressively get worse.

There are ways to save money on renovations, including the kitchen. In fact, with the right strategies, you can update your kitchen for thousands less than you would expect to spend. Sometimes, a renovation can be a hybrid between an actual renovation and a makeover. Both can make the kitchen more functional.

In this article, we will go over some of the ways you can save money doing a DIY renovation.

The cabinets

There are two main things that should be changed in a kitchen renovation. The cabinets and the appliances. The appliances are an obvious one since old ones don’t work well and are not nearly as energy-efficient as new ones. Buying new appliances will essentially pay for themselves.

However, new cabinets will transform the kitchen in many different ways. You can organize your kitchen to be more useful since you will improve its workflow. And it will also look updated and not like a retro throwback to an earlier time.

RTA kitchen cabinets are the best choice since they are ready to assemble which makes them ideal for the DIYer. Even if you aren’t very handy, installing cabinets yourself is doable and will save a ton of money.

The flooring

Putting in a beautiful hardwood floor can be very expensive. The materials cost a lot and it requires a professional since it is usually beyond the ability of most DIYers. However, you can have a beautiful-looking floor that replicates hardwood for a fraction of the price and easily install it yourself.

There is what is called a floating floor or laminate flooring. These are basically planks with a cover on them to simulate hardwood but are actually laminated plywood. They are called floating floors because they are installed over the existing floor over a styrofoam blanket and actually can move around to a degree.

They cost a fraction of a hardwood floor and can be installed easily in a day if you work in two. They click and lock on each other so there is nothing to assemble really. The only thing you need to do is cut them at their ends to fit against the wall with a gap so they can expand.

Give it some paint

Once the cabinets and floors are done, a fresh paint job is going to seal the deal. The look of the kitchen can be tied together well with the right color scheme. It is what will update the look and bring it to modern times instead of looking like a blast from the past.

Pick the colors that will work best with the color of the floor if you decided to go with a natural wood effect.

FOR THE KITCHEN…

notice-any-of-these-7-things-call-an-electrician-immediately

Many of us take for granted that our home electrical systems will allow us to carry on with life as usual. Most of the time they do, especially if they were installed correctly and have been properly maintained. Still, there’s always a chance that something could go wrong. Sometimes, people accept certain malfunctions as normal and simply ignore them. That’s not necessarily a good idea. Take a look at the following problems to get a better idea of when you should call a professional electrician.

1) Smoke or a Burning Smell

Smoke is a sure sign it’s time to reach out for help. Where there’s smoke or a strange burning odor, there could be fire to follow. This is especially true if an outlet, light switch, or appliance is the source of the smoke or smell. It’s a good idea to make the local fire department your first point of contact. From there, contact an Idaho Falls electrician.

2) Sparks Coming from an Outlet or Switch

Sparks flying from an electrical outlet or switch are also a sign that a problem has developed. Seeing sparks when plugging in an electrical appliance or device is an indication of trouble, too. In either situation, be sure to contact an electrician in Idaho Falls as quickly as possible.

3) Your Lights Are Flickering

This is one of those issues people often dismiss as a normal occurrence. It’s not uncommon for lights to dim or flicker a bit when an appliance kicks on. That doesn’t mean it should be happening, though. This may be a warning sign that your electrical system needs repairs or you’re placing more of a strain on the system than it can handle. If your lights flicker or dim from time to time, don’t hesitate to find an electrician for help.

4) Unusual Buzzing Sounds

Buzzing sounds coming from outlets, switches, or other portions of your home electrical system can certainly be unnerving. That’s your internal fight-or-flight response kicking in, and it means there’s a clear and present danger. It could indicate a serious problem with the wiring that could lead to shocks or a fire.

5) Outlets are Hot to the Touch

If you plug in an appliance or device and notice the outlet feels warm or hot, there’s a problem in the making. This is also the case if your light switches start feeling warmer than usual. Unplug any items that are plugged into the outlet or turn off the affected switch immediately. Consider shutting off the circuit breaker that controls that portion of the electrical system as well. Then, call an electrician near me.

6) Tripping Circuit Breakers

Do some of the circuit breakers in your home trip from time to time? This often happens when an appliance kicks on or someone plugs a new appliance or device into an outlet. Though you can often switch the circuit breaker back on to temporarily remedy the issue, it’s a sign that there’s a serious underlying problem that needs professional attention.

7) Lights or Outlets Aren’t Working

If some or all of your lights or electrical outlets aren’t working, it’s definitely a good idea to call an electrician. Problems like these can disrupt your life, but they’re more than minor inconveniences. They’re indications that there’s a potentially dangerous problem with the overall electrical system.

Keeping Your Electrical System Safe and Functional

Some electrical issues are easy to spot. Others may not really seem like much of a problem. Either way, it’s best to have them checked out and repaired as quickly as possible. Ignoring even a seemingly minor electrical problem can lead to major malfunctions and safety hazards down the road.

4-design-tips-for-a-brand-new-space

After recently purchasing a home, such as one of the beautiful homes for sale in Agincourt, Toronto, one of the first and most exciting things to do is start designing and decorating your space.

With a clean and blank interior design canvas, you have ample opportunity to explore new trends, new styles and maybe even step out of your comfort zone. In most cases, you’ll still be equipped with your existing furniture and décor, but that doesn’t mean you have to feel boxed-in when it comes to your home design. Here are a few tips for recreating your new space.

Pick a Colour Scheme

Picking a colour palette for each room of your new home will be a lifesaver and help you to stop second guessing every purchase you make. Take a look at what you already have to work with, in terms of furniture and décor, and see what colours are prominent in your home.

Using what you have and drawing on those colours to bring flow and unity to a room can make everything look put-together and sleek. You could try to use different colours and tones in each room – warmer tones for a cosy bedroom and cooler tones in your living space for a fresh feeling. If most of your furniture is neutral, this is your opportunity to choose some now bold colours to bring into your life!

Embrace Wall Art

New homes tend to feel cold, empty, and well… A little lifeless at times. Bring some energy into your new space by hanging some art, paintings, or photographs on your walls. Adding sparks of your personal life and style to a room will not only add intrigue but make it feel more like home too.

Cluster Your Décor

Trinkets scattered across every shelf, table and counter in your home isn’t a good look. Displaying your décor pieces, memorabilia and other odds and ends is a great way to style your home and make it your own, but it’s important to avoid cluttering your space.

Creating a balance between items of different heights is a great way to bring balance to different spaces in your room. Cluster items like vases, books, baskets, candles coasters and other small accessories in little groups of different heights in various spaces. Try out a group on your coffee table, a group next to the television, a group on the shelf, and so on. This will create focal areas of style in your room.

Mix and Match

Just because you’re in a new space doesn’t mean you have to start from scratch and trying out new styles doesn’t mean you need to toss everything and start over, either! Working with what you already have and mixing and matching styles can actually look amazing.

A sleek and modern sofa paired with a more vintage style coffee table makes an interesting pairing, and combining bold pieces with more subtle décor can bring amazing balance to a room
