I just love what rugs can do for a room. They are a great opportunity to add some texture, print and colour into any room plus they help define a space. This year’s colour of the year is bold and beautiful living coral – personally, I love the bright and fresh tones especially in the summer months. With this long and snowy winter it feels like spring and summer may never arrive – but I know they will! This year’s nod to this hue – has totally inspired me ! If you know me or follow me on Instagram, you know I’m usually all about the neutrals. But this year I’m really into bold colour especially in rugs! Rugs are a great way to make a statement and totally freshen up any room!
I love how this rug adds a big splash of colour into this dining room. It also acts as a main component in the room – the teal hue for the chairs is pulled from the carpet and the metallic elements compliment this room. It’s images like this that have inspired me to select (and share) my top 6 colourful rugs.
This bedroom is so soothing and relaxing. The mix of colour tones on the bed itself makes this room bright and happy but still calming. The area rug adds that bold element to the room and the turquoise tone is pulled from the rug and echoed on the night stand in a vase with fresh flowers. The bed linens are adding so much personality with rosy tones pulled from the rug but also the mix of pattern. And I just love the textural detail on the bed frame!
My Top 6 Colourful Rugs
I love the vibrant colours of this area rug. The pink colour is so vibrant and it makes the different blue tones stand out and that slight pop of yellow is such lovely accent.
This rug is the best of both worlds for me! I am a huge fan of white – I love how clean it is and how bright it is! Plus it is the perfect back drop for these rich and colourful tones. I also love the boho feel that this rug would bring to any room. This exact rug is no longer available but this option has a similar colour palette with a bit of a vintage feel.
I love the vintage quality ofthis rug! Unfortunately, this exact rug is no longer available but here is a similar one. An item like this tells a story and adds that personal touch to a room. The tones of magenta and blue are vibrant but the aging of the rug adds some softness and subtleness. These vintage inspired rugs can add a lot of warmth to a space and pair so nicely with more modern pieces.
This rughas so much colour and so much personality – I love it! This is a great way to add some colour into a family room or living room. And with all of these great colours in the rug – you can create any colour story you like in your space – with pillows and other accessories!
This rugis my all-time favourite! It has all of the elements that I love in a great area rug. The vintage aged quality, the boho vibe and these bold pops of colour. This rug adds this ‘travelled’ look in a room and it brings personality and works with so many styles. I love it mixed with clean lines!
This rug is a bit more understated with it’s strong presence of navy blue but looking closely there are many colours. With a rug such as this one, you can play with red tones, the aqua tones, the yellow and even the shades of grey. The possibilities are endless.
The frenzy over shabby chic decorations has been fueled by a number of unique and beautiful posts on Pinterest, Instagram, and other social media sites. Shabby chic decors spruce up a home and make it look more enticing to live in. If you are looking for some ideas on shabby chic decorations to add a vintage feel to your home, then you have come to the right place.
In this post, we are giving you the top 10 list of shabby chic decorations that you can get some ideas to make your home more vintage looking. Check them out and do some home renovations this new year.
Shabby chic pillows
Pillows are among the small stuff that you can add to your home if you want to instantly change the aesthetics of your house. Pillows are also affordable which you can easily purchase to provide that shabby chic vibe. Sofa, couches, chairs, and beds are the common sites for pillows but these days, the pillows can also be placed directly on the floor for a homier look.
Picture frames
Picture frames are another type of decoration that can be easily added to a house to give that shabby chic look. Get your old picture frames or you can also use new ones. The trick is to distress the paint of the frame and you have your own DIY shabby chic picture frame.
You can even do a two-color distress frame. Layer two colors of your preferred chalk paint. Set it aside to dry. You can also opt to add other designs by pasting it on the frame. Then distress the paint by rubbing off some of the paint slowly. You can also age a wood frame with some wax.
Framed jewelry organizer
It is convenient and space-saving to have a jewelry organizer. Having a shabby chic one is far better especially if it is a DIY one. Keeping your pieces of jewelry in small boxes makes it easier for you to forget about them because they are hidden from your view. They can just clatter in your drawers, and worst, they can all be tangled and difficult to untangle when you are in a rush to use one.
For a DIY shabby chic jewelry organizer, get a picture frame where you can attach a wire at the back to replace the glass cover. Fasten the wires with a staple gun and you already have a place to hang your earrings. You can also distress the frame for a more classic look.
Add a shelf for your bracelets and necklaces below the picture frame jewelry organizer. Use some dowels and drawer pulls in the shelf to accommodate all your pieces of jewelry in one location.
Wood shelf
Wood shelves are easy to convert into a shabby chic looking one. Just distress the paint off the shelves and you’re good to go.
Get lumber around 2″ thick and cut it according to the preferred length. Prepare the number of lumbers according to the number of shelves you want to establish.
Prepare the brackets that will hold the lumber shelves. Look for a shabby chic looking one to add more character to the shelves.
Stain the lumber and the shelving brackets with your preferred paint colors.
Wax the shelves for a good finish.
Wipe the paint several times with a cloth, paintbrush, or sandpaper to distress the stain.
Mount the distressed shelves using the shelving brackets.
Shutters wall decor
Shutters are no longer for windows alone. They can be repurposed to fill up a blank wall to give a house a more rustic look. You can opt to have it cover the whole wall or just a portion of it. You can focus on the window area by placing it on both sides of the window and you’ll have a dressed up window.
You can also dress up a headboard or a fireplace with some rustic shutters. Some even used it as shelves and hanging area. A little creativity can go a long way.
Feel free to paint your shutters with your favorite tint. Shabby chic paints usually belong in the female decor style and one cannot go wrong with a chalky, sage, cottage, metallic, or antique pinks, greens, or blues.
Mason jar pen holders
Some of us cannot live without pens and we hoard it like there is no tomorrow. Consequently, our house and office space are cluttered with pens which usually are hard to find when you need them.
Mason jars are nice containers for pens but they are prettier when painted and distressed for a shabbier look. Paint your mason jar with your favorite rustic color. Paint it in thin coats and wait for the paint to dry. Then wipe it a bit to distress the stain once dry and your mason jar is ready for your pens and pencils. Like the other stuff, you can also add some character with lace, ribbons, and flowers to make them look more enticing.
Curtains
Shabby chic curtains are mostly vintage in style. They look a little worn in vintage floral patterns, ticking stripes, old French linens and soft kinds of cotton, lace, and frills. With your shabby chic curtains, you can easily dress up your windows and be delighted with the colors, lace, and flowers they usually come with.
Decorated shabby chic bottles
Old bottles can be turned into shabby chic decors. Clean them up and decorate with some lace, ribbons, and flowers and they are ready for your shelves. You can use them as decors on their own or as flower base for your kitchen or living room.
Wreath
Add in a wreath on your front door and welcome your guests with your shabby chic decor. An empty wall in your room or living area can also use some wreath. You can easily purchase them or create one using some old ribbons, flowers, fabric, and circular styrofoam.
Repurposed tin cans and wine bottles
Tin cans are always plenty of homes and restaurants. These items can be up cycled into shabby chic decors. All you need are some paint, a paint brush, and a distressing material like cloth or sandpaper and you can start making repurposed tin cans. You can also add some lace and ribbon to dress them up further.
Place these items on your shelves or on tabletops and you can use them as containers or flower base depending on your preference.
Additional Points to Consider in Decorating a House the Shabby Chic Way
Do not be afraid to mix and match.
The shabby chic look comes in stained and distressed look as well as metals and irons. So do not be afraid to add them in your decor. Furnishings must come in various colors, finishes, styles, and era. The more varied they are, the more interesting and vintage will be the outcome.
Feminine look is fun and inclusive.
Some women are afraid to dress up their home in a shabby chic way thinking their husbands and other male children or home companions may not find it appropriate for them. Keep in mind that the shabby chic look is actually fun and men also need the feminine comfort that it brings. Besides, it also includes vintage furnishings and you can add these up in a manly way like old, worn out bikes hanging on your wall. Again, do not be afraid to mix and match. It is fun that way.
Add in vintage elements.
Vintage accessories, hardware, and fixtures painted in white or even in pastel colors provide a shabby chic look in a room. Use the old stuff of your grandparents or rummage an antique shop and you will never go wrong with some vintage elements in your house.
The shabby chic look is easy to achieve with distinct colors.
In terms of tints and shades, one cannot go wrong with pinks, blues, and greens. Use the sage, bungalow, metallic, chalky, and antique ones to dress your house the shabby chic way. Do not forget to distress the paint to make it more vintage looking.
Use different shades of whites.
White is not a specific color but different shades of it add a lot of shabby chic character in a house. Use a lot of whites and give your house that intimate feel that any person can appreciate. Your white items can also add that extra-light, cool, and lovely feeling.
Fill your house with shabby chic fabrics and cover your furnishings for a more fluffy feeling
Delicate vintage fabrics like lace and some floral prints complete a shabby chic look of a home. Use curtains and pillowcases with ruffles to add extra flair and texture. Add some slipcovered furniture with floral prints or French fabrics for a cozier look.
This list of decoration ideas can keep you busy the whole month. Start it early so you can enjoy the cozy feels of a shabby chic new home this 2019 and you are all set for more Pinterest and Instagram posts.

Are you looking to sell your home in the foreseeable future? If so, then it’s time you started taking the current housing market into consideration. Regardless of its location or its size, most of the time, your home will not be able to sell itself, which is why you need to decorate it in a way that appeals to the potential buyers of today.
If you’re not a professional in the field of interior design, then this could prove to be quite a difficult task for you to undertake. Fortunately, you can read below to get a better idea of how you can prep your home for a viewing.
Declutter, but don’t depersonalize
When it comes to decorating your home with the housing market in mind, you must take one all-important factor into consideration: potential buyers need to be able to envisage themselves living there. They need to be able to instantly see themselves and their family spending time together in your living room, and they need to see their children growing up and developing in their individual bedrooms. They’re not going to be able to do this, though, if your home is cluttered or lacking in a personal touch.
There’s a fine line between decluttering and depersonalizing, but you can tow it. To do this, you should get rid of everything that is of no use to anybody — all of those documents that are just lying around on your dining table, for instance — but you shouldn’t get rid of the dining table itself. Potential buyers need things to stimulate their ideas when it comes to making the home their own, and something like a dining table (more to the point, the potential of family dinners) could do just that.
When it comes to personalizationspecifically, it’s a good idea to leave your family photographs and portraits hanging up on the wall. As long as they aren’t inappropriate, they will prove to potential buyers that yours is a home that has the potential to be lived in.
Go green wherever you can
You should make your home as sustainable and as eco-friendlyas you can, as this is a home trend that many of today’s buyers are now looking out for.
There are plenty of ways for you to go green in your home, some of which include:
Having engineered oak flooring fitted — you can find highly-sustainable Kährs flooring at Kensyard.co.uk.
Having solar panels fitted to your roof — the panels will act as an advertisement to passing buyers of the fact that your home utilizes the sun to create its own energy, which can be a money-saving addition in the long run.
Only ever using high appliances with high energy-efficiency ratings — this will help your potential buyers save on their energy bills going forward, which is, in itself, an attraction.
For your home to be able to reach its full potential on the housing market, you need to spruce it up a bit. Taking the above advice will help you to do just that.
It’s claimed that moving is one of the most stressful things you and your family will ever undergo. The apprehension of your new home being ready to move into, solicitors fees, and not losing or breaking anything in transit can make the whole experience truly anxiety-inducing. However, to make the whole endeavor more of a seamless transition, there are a few things to tick off first.
Pick out the essentials
It’s likely that your former home will have its contents moved over gradually. When the first load of furniture and items are moved over, what can you absolutely not live without first? Most removal services recommend prioritizing your removal items and for good reason. If your bed and settee are what makes you feel at home and you think will be a nightmare to live without, put them in the first truck. Toothbrushes, chargers and clothing for a week should also be set aside just to be on the safe side. Treat the first week like a vacation and all bases should be covered.
Move your suppliers over
While you spend the next fortnight or so arranging and then rearranging the new rooms in your house, the last thing you want to be doing is chasing unfinished admin. Letting your current suppliers know well in advance that you’re going to be moving properties is one of the most valuable time-saving tasks to undergo first.
Don’t give the landlord an excuse
If you rent and don’t own your home, then the landlord will need to be satisfied that your house is in good condition. It might feel trivial, but going through each room and checking that cupboards aren’t scuffed, no handles have fallen off and that every appliance still works might be the difference between getting your deposit back or a hefty fine.
The big clean
In the same vein as checking everything in your home was the way you found it, giving the house a decent clean means the landlord is less likely to pick out that one stain on the carpet. Hiring a service to steam clean and deodorize your carpets while you spend valuable time wiping down units and furniture is the most stress-free way of completing this task. Hunting around for a renowned carpet cleaning service is the best way of doing this; companies such as mytechnicare.com will detail what is included in their service.
Visualize your new place
Good Housekeeping recommends imagining the design of your new place before you move in, but actually this is an incredibly smart and proactive idea. The more excited you are to start decorating and plan the layout, the more likely you are to get everything packed away and ready to go. Plotting where to put furniture and hang picture frames means you’ll be keener to speed up the process. It might feel like the process is taking forever, but before you know it, you’ll be safely moved into your brand new home. Never be shy to ask for help, and make sure you undertake time-saving measures in advance. That way, you’ll have plenty of time on your hands to do someinterior design and spend some time getting to know your new neighbors.

When it comes to home style, it can be difficult to stand out. How do you keep up with the times while maintaining an evergreen abode? The answer to this question comes from just across the pond.
Take a note from Northern Europe, which boasts some of the happiest countries in the world, and dip your toe into hygge. Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish lifestyle and decor technique that values coziness and taking advantage of the little moments.
From comfy sofas to interior home colors, there are plenty of ways to add a little hygge to your home. Use these tips and tricks to make sure your home is operating at its highest level of coziness.
Hygge rule #1 :Follow the 3 C’s: Cool, Calm and Collected (Colors)
If you’re considering bringing hygge to your living room, the easiest way to make the most distinguishing change is through paint color. Paint interiors should be neutral and calm with some subtle pops of color.
Grays, taupes and whites are timeless while green, blue and soft purples tie in overarching themes of tranquility.
Hygge rule #2 : Add a Little Ambiance
Quick lighting fixes are an amazing way to change your home decor simply and affordably and often an area of interiors that is overlooked. Versatility is a quality that lighting, more than anything else, can take advantage of.
When considering hygge, light your living room in soft hues with warm tones.Industrial lightingcan add an extra element of minimalism to your space while still making things interesting. Don’t be afraid to mix it up a bit. Floor, table and even hanging lamps provide plenty of possibilities.
Hygge Rule #3 : Organize Your Life
Whether or not you believe in the common folklore of Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow, spring is still right around the corner. And that means it’s time to get things organized for the rest of the year.
Make spring cleaning easier with simple improvements to your living room such as built in bookshelves or temporary storage pieces. Ottomans andunique baskets are a great place to stash extra blankets and throw pillows while keeping clutter at bay.
Consider purchasing a small desk or end table to incorporate into your living space to hold little odds and ends. Knick knacks tend to pile up so make sure you stay on top of organization with regular cleaning sessions where you can decide to keep or toss random hardware. Hygge is all about appreciating what you have so now is the perfect time to declutter.
Hygge rule #4 : Get Snuggled Up
The main goal of hygge for your living room is comfort. Make sure your space is as cozy as it can be by decorating with plenty of soft pillows, blankets and rugs.
Combine simplicity and comfort with modern and affordable sofasthat tie in all of the elements of your home. Grab your favorite cuddle buddy (human or four legged) for the ultimate snuggle sesh. You may never want to leave the couch.

I started smudging my home about 3 years ago – my husband thought that I was a bit crazy but after the first time I smudged our home he noticed a difference too!
Smudging is a common practice in feng shui and many Native Americans as well. You will also hear followers of alternative healing mention speak of this practice, too! In short, it involves burning certain herbs (I will explain more about the types of herbs , keep reading). The smoke from burning these herbs will fill the air and it helps to clear out negative energy. Don’t be intimated by the practice – it’s quite simple!
The benefits of smudging
I try to smudge my home once a month but we are a busy family and if I’m being totally honest it doesn’t happen every month. One routine I do try to stick to with this practice is – to smudge after having guests over. Why? People carry energy with them and you never know what energy they are surrounded by….so we like to clear it all out!
Everytime I smudge my home we all notice a big difference. Everything in the house feels lighter. If you want to read more about the practice and it’s benefits – I found this article to be very useful – 8 Reasons You Should Try Smudging
How to smudge and what you need
There are different herbs that can be used to smudge and they all deal with different aspects that affect your home’s energy in a negative way.
Cedar is said to be calming, purifying, comforting and protect.
Juniper is clarifying, cleansing, helps with focus and centering.
Pine is for renewal, strengthening and cleansing.
Sweetgrass is for healing, purification and encourages positive energy.
Sage is for clearing negative energy and encouraging balance.
Personally I use White sage most of the time. If you are wondering about the smell when you cleanse your home with buring white sage – I don’t mind it (it smells a bit spicy, like Christmas spices).
You will need a bundle of dried herbs also known as a ‘smudging stick’. You will also need matches, a candle and a fireproof bowl (if you look online you will see a lot of sheels being used but any fireproof bowl is fine). Some sand – you will spave it in the fire proof bowl (I don’t always use sand, to be honest). You might also see feathers used in smudging. You don’t have to use one (I don’t) if you carry the smoking herb bundle (aka smudge stick) around the home with the fireproof bowls in the other hand (to catch any falling embers that’s just fine). I also keep my windows open while I smudge the house – this allows the negative energy to be released from the home. I’m not sure if this is how everyone practices but this is how I was taught.
So how do you smudge your home?
Start by getting out all of the supplies you need.
Next light your candle with a match – you will use the candle to light the smudge stick. It’s not a torch you want it smoldering. So once lit wave it around. Be sure to have the fireproof bowl under the smoldering smudging stick – for safety reasons and for catching embers that may fall off.
I circulate around my home – smudging room by room and waving the smudge stick around (some use a feather to circulate the smoke but I like to keep it simple). Be sure to focus on corners – it is believed that negative energy ‘sticks’ in the corners of a room. Pay attention to all rooms not just the main or mostly used rooms – laundry rooms, closets and even the garage can have stagnant energy.
So now that you have circulated around the entire home – you need to conclude the session. You will put out the smoldering sage stick in the sand in the fireproof bowl. You can keep the candle burning (I ujsually do for anothwr 30 mins or so). When it comes to smudging be sure to set aside enough time – this process shouldn’t be rushed (15-20 minutes is usually enough time – the time depends on the size of your home).
Smudging your home is a great way to start the new year – a clean slate, a clear energy in your home and peace of mind. I will be smudging this week and I know you will enjoy this practice too!

Pantone’s colour of the year for 2019 is Living Coral
It has been announced ‘Living Coral’ is the color of the year. This color is vibrant yet warm. It is full of life and energy. Living coral is bright, bold, optimistic and joyful! Coral is the perfect blend of natural beauty and it is one of my personal favorite colors especially in the hot summer months.
Living Coral in the Home
This bright tone might seem like a strange choice for the home but it is a beautiful color. It works beautifully with white and grey, navy blue and metallic tones – it adds a fresh and bold pop to nay room. I personally love it in a bathroom or outside space but my absolute favorite spot for this hue is in a girls bedroom or nursery. I love this color because it is a bit unexpected from the typical pink and I like that it grows nicely with a baby to a teenager.
I also love coral when it comes to beauty and fashion. It is a beautiful and flattering hue on everyone. It is perfect on toes, fingers, lips and cheeks. It is bright but just a small touch will add so much life to your face. It is my go-to pedi color – I wear it all summer long! A number of years ago, I was a guest at a wedding and coral was the colour of the bridesmaid’s dresses and it was such a fresh pop of color in that July wedding.
Here are some of my favorite Living Coral pieces for the home but also in fashion and beauty. I think you will find this tone to be very flattering and it will add life to your look (home and fashion).
To help you get ahead, we’ve outlined some first-time homebuyer tips by calling out six of the biggest mistakes that you should avoid going into the purchase of your first home that could end up saving you a lot of time, money, and frustration.
Mistake #1: not getting pre-approved
Many first-time buyers make the mistake of thinking that they don’t need to get approved for a mortgage until they’ve found their dream home.
Unfortunately, that often ends up being too late.
These days, most sellers require that pre-approvals be submitted along with any offer, and, since your finances need to be vetted before the lender will agree to grant you a loan, this process can take days or even weeks.
Doing so will give you extra time to work on your finances, if needed, and will ensure that you’re ready to submit an offer ASAP once you’ve found your perfect match.
2. Borrowing the maximum amount
Once you have your pre-approval in hand, it’s time to decide how much you can afford to spend.
Many buyers mistakenly believe that the figure they’re given on their pre-approval letter should serve as their target sale price. However, make sure that this move won’t leave you feeling “house poor.”
Instead, it’s better to think of loan amounts as a range. You have the ability to borrow up to the amount on your pre-approval, but you don’t necessarily have to go that far.
The better move is to do some budgeting of your own.
First, look at your income and expenses to determine how much money you’d feel comfortable putting towards a mortgage payment each month. Then, using that number, play around with a mortgage calculator until you land on a price of how much house you can really afford.
Unfortunately, though, what ends up happening in many of these scenarios is that they end up finding that these properties were steals for a reason.
Often, the repairs require more time, money, and skills than the buyers can afford.
If you’re looking at fixer upper properties that require a lot of TLC — especially foreclosures, short sales, or auctions — you need to be honest with yourself about your abilities.
Do you have any previous remodeling experience? Can you afford to hire professional help? Are you prepared to cope with unforeseen problems and expenses?
Though some of these things may be hard to admit, doing so can end up saving you a lot of frustration in the long run.
4. Skipping the fine print
Yes, you should always read every contract you sign in full.
But, as anyone who’s ever sped through a “Terms & Conditions” agreement can tell you, that’s easier said than done.
While it might be tempting to simply skim your Agreement of Sale (and any addendums), resist the urge. This mistake could end up costing you.
Successful real estate transactions depend on each party fulfilling their respective contingencies by the deadlines specified in the agreement.
By signing, you’ve agreed to fulfill your end of the bargain. If you fail to meet those obligations, the seller may be entitled to take your deposit monies in reparations.
When you’re negotiating your offer, make sure you know exactly what you’re agreeing to before you sign on the dotted line.
5. Bypassing your inspections
Conventional wisdom states that skipping your inspections will put you in a better bargaining position. While this is true, the reality is inspections are for the buyer’s benefit.
They give you a realistic picture of what’s wrong with the property, so that you can either choose to buy it with eyes-wide-open and negotiate on repairs or walk away and find a more suitable option.
In contrast, when you choose to waive your inspections, you’ve agreed to take financial responsibility for any repairs that may come up, even if the problems pre-date your ownership of the property. Weigh your options carefully before deciding whether or not this risk is worth it to you. In some cases, just shortening your inspection contingency might be enough to make your offer more competitive.
6. Forgetting about closing costs
Budgeting to buy a home isn’t just about figuring out how you’ll swing a downpayment and monthly mortgage amount.
There are also closing costs to consider.
Your closing costs will be paid at settlement. They will include any fees needed to facilitate the transaction such as deed-recording fees, title insurance, and appraisal costs.
The exact amount you’ll pay will depend on the specific services needed to close on your property. Realistically, however, you can expect to pay between 2%-5% of the home’s purchase price, and that needs to be factored into your overall cost of buying a place.
You are probably wondering – what is a Christmas tree collar? You likely have a tree skirt – or some fabric that wraps around the base of your tree and it covers the stand. Well a collar is the same idea but what I like about the collar is that it is more substantial and it has some height so it really disguises that stand and open area between the floor and the tree branches.
I personally love the volume of the Christmas tree collar and like a tree skirt they come in so many different styles. The wicker collar adds some great texture and a natural element to this tree. There are colourful options, farmhouse options and some great metal options too!
I love the galvanized metal collar in this image – it has a farmhouse feel and metallics work so well at Christmas. It is a great neutral tone and it really works with a modern farmhouse Christmas style.
