budget-staging

Stores and restaurants know how to make people want to buy: the right presentation sparks imagination and desire. It’s why the front of a restaurant shows a set table in candlelight, and why store windows use eye-catching design elements and little scenes as background. These tricks create emotional connection between customers and things for sale.

Home staging works the same way, making a house for sale visually attractive and sparking the buyers’ imaginations. It’s especially important in the rooms where daily life happens, such as living rooms and other shared spaces. The goal is prospective buyers saying, “We could host everyone for the holidays so easily here!” or “Imagine relaxing in front of this fireplace. The dogs would love it, too!” There are some basic good ideas to follow in your living room staging, but also specific tricks to make it look its best.

Three “big picture” (and budget conscious) ideas to keep in mind are:

  • Declutter: You need an open, spacious look, so emphasize the house’s features and lifestyle with minimal décor. Surfaces should be clean, shelves partially filled, and furniture kept to a few pieces. Accessories should make a statement, not fill space.
  • Depersonalize: A buyer cannot imagine living there if all they see is someone else’s life. Along with the clutter, remove personal things, such as photos and collections, from view.
  • Deep-Clean: Never underestimate sparkling cleanliness as a great first impression. Cleaning companies often have special services for home sales, but you can also DIY. Dust everything, from ceiling to floor. Scrub walls and windows. Polish wood. Vacuum all fabric. Get every corner, every cranny, very clean.

Once this “canvas” is ready, here are three secret home staging tips for a beautiful look that will appeal.

Budget friendly tips:

First, use color effectively. For walls and furniture, neutrals bring comfortable simplicity without risk. But you do not have to paint stark white; there are many attractive neutral shades available. Brighter color should be limited to accessories, such as a signature piece of art or an arrangement of throw pillows. Use “pops” of color to direct attention, add visual appeal, and insert that bit of “wow” factor. Plants and flowers have the same effect and add life.

Second, create vignettes, or small staged scenes, to display lifestyle so that buyers want to sit right down in your living room! Pick areas close to windows, lighting, or great features, then arrange furniture and other items to suggest wonderful experiences. For example, the corner where the bookshelves meet the window becomes a reading nook with an easy chair. A teacup and pretty book on a tray can finish the vignette. The fireplace area can invite cozy conversation or relaxation with sofa and chairs. Or anchor seating around a view, or just a lovely table with a vase of flowers and some interesting objects. Keep decoration restrained, with impersonal grouped items in odd numbers.

Third, remember there are professionals to help. First-timers may be unsure how to place furniture or which accessories are best; often, we can’t see our own possessions the way an objective outsider can. Home stagers can offer advice, check your work after you DIY, or do the staging for you. They have the experience, talent, and supplies for perfect staging. Ask your realtor for trusted recommendations, or explore stagers’ sites online.

african-mud-cloth-trend

This year the trend in pattern and textile is African Mud cloth and personally, I love it! I’m a big fan of neutrals but I also love the organic element of this textile….

So what is ‘African Mud cloth’?

Originating in Mali – African Mud Cloth is a handmade Malian cotton which is dyed using a fermented mud. the patterns have meaning, too. There are various symbols and in each design the symbols are used to tell a story.  So each piece is unique and has a story to tell – which I feel is one reason why this textile is so attractive and interesting. Similar to the trend of Scandinavian inspired rugs that we saw everywhere last year – African Mud cloth has a simple pattern with visual interest…

Inspiration …..

I feel the best way to embrace this trend is will pillows – because they are neutral and so simple they will work with most decor styles. Try adding this organic element to your Farmhouse decor or add these neutral patterns to your modern space to add some warmth.

Adding some subtle and neutral pattern to this clean bright white space adds visual interest with dominating the space.

I love how the black mud cloth pillow acts like an anchor in this modern meets rustic entry. It has an organic connection with the wood and it echoes the black lighting and the gallery wall.

Shop African Mud cloth…

Next on my shopping list (or wish list) are some pillows to add to my Master bedroom which is in need of an update (I will be sure to blog about that makeover when the time comes….) I love that you can update your current pillows with some covers.  No need to store additional pillows plus it makes updating your space much more affordable. Here are some great finds and many of them come in sets which makes it even easier……

Set of 4 African Mudcloth pillow covers 18 x 18

African Mudcloth 16 x 16 pillow cover

Set of 3 African Mudcloth pillow covers (various sizes)

What do you think of this trend?

Fall Nail Polish

fall-nail-polish

I love celebrating the fall season with home decor and fashion (yay sweater weather!) but I also love fall nail polish colours!  I’m not personally into nail art (but I appreciate it) I like embracing colours that compliment the season and work with all of my fun fall clothes. Here are my favourite fall nail colours and some that I’m ‘rocking’ right now!

6 Best Fall Nail Polish colours

Rose Gold nail polish

So in the early fall I’m not necessarily quite ready to dive into the deeper tones.  But I saw this at my favourite nail salon…‘Awakening’ by China Glaze.  It is the perfect post-summer pre-fall tone.  I would describe it as mauve meet rose gold.  I have this colour on my toes right now and I love it! It looks amazing with that post-summer tan…..

Navy Blue Nail Polish

I love navy blue all year long but I especially love it in the fall months.  It really compliments those orange and gold tones we see at this beautiful time of year.  I do find that a true navy can be a bit too dark but this is a colour that my sister wears all of the time and it is so flattering!  ‘Rock Royality’ by CND – yes, it is a shellac and in this image it looks more like a deep purple but it can also look like navy blue depending on the light and your skin tone.

Taupe Nail Polish

I am a huge fan of neutrals, in home decor, fashion and even nail polish.  Neutrals go with everything and there is a flattering shade for everyone! Right now I am wearing a taupe shade (after a summer of rocking long nails in French ombre) this is was a change for me! I love this OPI ‘taupe-less beach’ hue.  It’s so clean and modern.

Burnt Orange Nail Polish

For the summer, coral tones are my go-to (especially for my toes, I think that’s the shade I wore from May to August).  But coral is just to tropical for fall.  But if you are a fan of that hue this is a great fall inspired alternative for you.  Essie ‘Playing Koi’ is a total nod to Pumpkin Spice – it has a burnt orange look but it is still bold and fun!

Brown Nail Polish

I never really found that the black nail polish worked for me.  It just felt a bit ‘costumey’ to me (although perfect for Halloween).  But I love a darker polish. So a deep or even medium brown is a good alternative.  I like the warmth and it is still dark. Zoya has a great colour ‘Gina’ which is a great warm – neutral option.

Gold nail Polish

Metallics are a great way to add some bling to your everyday.  As you know I love saying fairly neutral (in fashion and my home) but I love wearing jewelry with a simple outfit! It brings in so much personality and style! I usually paint my nails in a glittery gold at Christmas. But recently I have embraced metallics as an autumn go-to.  They are a great alternative to neutrals and they work with the gorgeous foliage. China Glaze ‘Passion’ isn’t glittery but it has a sheen so it’s enough bling without being over the top for the everyday!

Now that fall is here, what nail polish colours do you like to like to wear?

CLEANING

How to Clean a Burnt Pot

how-to-clean-burnt-pot

No matter how great a cook you are, you will likely come across a burnt pot. You let it sit and soak overnight but the next day, that burnt on food is just not coming off….

Last Sunday, I was cooking in my kitchen (as I tend to do most Sundays). I had chili in the crockpot and spaghetti sauce on the cooktop.  Somehow the burner on the cooktop was turned up and next thing you know, burnt sauce! I was able to salvage the sauce but the bottom of my pot was a mess.  I did the typical soaking overnight and managed to get most of the mess off of the bottom but there was still some burnt residue.

My Burnt Pot (Before):

As you can see, my husband was scraping the bottom to try and get the mess off of the bottom of the pot but it was pretty stuck.

So what did I use to save my burnt pot?

I know that vinegar and baking soda are natural products often used for cleaning and I also saw a video on Rachel Ray about removing burnt on food with aluminum foil. I have all 3 of those items in my home – so I thought I would give it a try!

I first tried the balled up aluminum (just like you see in the video) it worked a bit but not as easily as it did in the show.  My burnt on mess was a bit damp and I wonder if that was a factor (in the video it appears that it is completely dry).

So I moved onto the next plan:

  • Mix about 1/4 cup of white vinegar to my pot and about 3 cups of water.  (I didn’t measure precisely, that’s why I’m saying about).
  • Bring the mixture to the stove top and let it to a boil for about 5-7 minutes.
  • Once boiled for 5-7 minutes, return the pot back to the sink (carefully, it’s hot!) and add about a table spoon of baking soda.

And just like science class, it bubbles up like those mini volcanoes we built in class.  I could see some of the burnt pieces rise to the top of my water.  I let the water cool off to a point that it wasn’t scorching hot and I used my kitchen brush to clean off the burnt bits.  With minimal effort, most of it came off.  The little stubborn bits……I used that balled up aluminum and it worked like a charm!

TA-DA! My ‘Burnt’ pot (After):

And just like that…it looks like new! I love knowing how to get rid of a big mess without using harsh chemicals.  Don’t you?

5-things-that-instantly-date-your-home

No one wants a dated home, but unfortunately, we sometimes get so stuck on the same décor that we don’t even realize what other people might perceive when they take a look around. Luckily, some of the things that most obviously and instantly date a home are also in many cases easy to remedy.

The following are some of those elements that can make people feel that your home is outdated at first glance and a few things you can do to alleviate the problem.

1. Window Coverings

Window coverings are one of the most obvious factors that date a room or an entire home. If you have very heavy, ornate panels or valances, or old miniblinds, it can ruin the look of the rest of the room.

If you want to focus on updating one area of your home, start with those window coverings. Choose modern window coverings that are streamlined and chic, and if possible opt for custom blinds because they create a very high-end look.

Choosing the right custom window coverings can even improve the resale value of your home.

2. Overwhelming Prints

Prints in your home décor aren’t inherently bad, and you’ll often see designers integrating prints. However, you might want to take stock of the prints you’re using in your home design elements. If they’re, as an example, large floral prints in shades of pink and green, it might be time for a change.

If you want a timeless, enduring home design style, it’s better to keep things a bit simpler. It not only stands the test of time, but it also feels sleek and luxe.

Rather than going with extreme prints and patterns, you might think about bringing in texture, richness, and depth through the use of different types of materials—such as natural and woven materials.

3. Light Fixtures

Replacing light fixtures can breathe new life into any space. People often think it’s difficult or expensive to replace light fixtures, and in reality, it doesn’t have to be either of those things.

You can choose inexpensive light fixtures in modern finishes, and it can be a DIY project.

4. Carpet

Carpet is a rarity in modern home design. If anywhere you might find some in bedrooms, but beyond that, you’re probably not going to see much of it.

If you have carpet in places like the dining room and living room, you might want to become a weekend warrior and take it out.

You could have some beautiful wood floors hiding under there, and even if you don’t, there are relatively inexpensive laminate options you can install.

Removing old carpet isn’t just good from an aesthetic perspective. It can also make your house cleaner and less prone to trapping allergens.

5. Cabinet Color

Finally, the color of your kitchen and even bathroom cabinets can make your house seem old—maybe even older than it really is. If you have something like cabinets in a golden wood color, you might want to think about taking on a refinishing or repainting project. You don’t have to get all new cabinets because that can be extremely expensive, but a paint job might do a world of good.

If you are considering resale in the near or even distant future, consider these 5 things and create a to-do list to keep your home current and not dated. You will enjoy the space and the future buyers will, too!

storage-style

Storage…..when it comes to keeping a busy family organized storage is key! It’s not easy (or necessarily affordable to add closet space) but finding the right baskets can keep your space organized and without Mom and Dad doing all of the work.

Storage Baskets for Kids’ Stuff

I love baskets for kids because it is easy for them to tidy up! You can teaching them how to sort by labeling your baskets (one for trucks, one for LEGO…..can you tell I have 3 boys!) Plus with stylish baskets you can keep a shared space like a living room or family room, clutter free and calm.  I have made a rule that if we run out of room in the baskets – we don’t add baskets, we de-clutter!

Storage with Style

You might think that a storage basket may not work with your decor but there are so many shapes, sizes and styles…..I have sourced a number of different options and they are all on amazon (who doesn’t love online shopping?!)

1 – Large seagrass woven basket

2 – Woven wicker basket with handles

3 – 4 piece cube stripe storage baskets

4 – Large cotton rope stripe basket

5 – Round grey storage basket

6 – Grey linen storage basket

7 – Medium nickel wire basket

8 – Round large wire basket (antique copper)

I also love using baskets for smaller spaces that tend to get disorganized – bathroom vanities (in my home anyway) tend to get messy and fast.  I love small wire baskets for storing various products (shampoo, conditioner etc…).  The wire makes it easy to see what’s inside and if there’s a spill – it’s so easy to clean.

I also love to use baskets to keep my pantry organized. Mostly for smaller things like spice packages and my coffee pods.

What do you use to keep your space organized?

how-to-be-thankful-and-show-gratitude

‘Being thankful’ sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But often I find we get so caught up in everyday life and the stress that it can cause that we forget to be grateful for what we have in this life.  Here are some simple ways to demonstrate and give thanks

20 Ways to be Thankful….

1 – Make a new habit of starting each day with writing down 3 things that you are grateful for.

2 – Compliment others on something other than their appearance … “You are so talented” “You are so generous with your time, this school is so lucky to have you”

3 – Pay for someone else’s coffee (a friend, co-worker or stranger….) It doesn’t cost a lot of money but it is such a big gesture.

4 – Read a long bedtime story to your kids (they will love it!)

5 – Say ‘thank you’ more often (and when you say it, look the person in the eye). It is so nice to hear and it is so simple to say.

6 – Help a friend run errands. It’s so much more fun! Plus it is a great way to catch up – texting is great but face to face means so much more.

7 – Volunteer at your kid’s school (teachers love having guest readers or parents who can work with a small group of kids)

8 – Donate used clothing. Clear out that closet, you will be amazed at what you have that someone else could benefit from….Check out Dress for Success they do amazing work for women

9 – Chaperon your kid’s field trip (they will love it, the school will appreciate it and you will have fun, too)

10 – Walk outside when you can. Soak in your surroundings and appreciate the beauty before your eyes.

11 – Grab coffee with a new colleague (it’s tough being the ‘new kid’).

12 – Send someone flowers (for no reason)

13 – Like the service at your local coffee shop or a new restaurant – write a yelp or Google review. Or even better, tell the manager and be sure to mention your server by name, it feels good to give praise and receive it

14 – Your time is the greatest gift, so spend a day with someone you love. My favourite gifts for my kids is when aunts and uncles take them to the movies, to a museum, camping or a sleepover – they don’t stop talking about those experiences and amazing memories!

15 – Take out the trash…..in other words do someone else’s chores.  My husband typically takes out the trash and recycling but I will do it for him (especially when he’s over worked) and I know he appreciates it!

16 – Host a wine or appetizer night at home.  It could be for a group of friends or maybe just your husband – have some great conversation and maybe learn about tasting wine. Sharing food and drink is a way to bond and re-connect.

17 – Send a postcard (or handwritten letter) to someone you love or someone that could you some positive encouragement. We are so bombarded with emails, taking the time to send something handwritten shows you care and took the time.

18 – Drop off a care package or a meal for a new mom – I remember a colleague of my husband made us some casseroles to bring home after our son was born and it was the greatest gift. I will always remember her kindness

19 – Plan a fun (and surprise) date night.  This requires some planning if you want to leave the house … but it’s worth it! It’s important to have date nights as a couple (plus I believe it is so important for our kids to see us as a couple, too).

20 – Cook a meal (completely from scratch) for friends and/or family. Make your favourite dish and let others try something you love…

If we make an effort to practice being thankful everyday… you will be amazed at how it changes the world around you,

top-10-fall-decor-pieces

Fall is coming….yes, my favourite season is almost here! Fall is THE most beautiful season for so many reasons – the crisp air, the colourful leaves, all of the cozy textures and natural ones, too! I love celebrating new seasons with changing up my home decor, it’s so simple to add some new pieces to your current space and the results make it all feel brand new! Here are my top 10 fall decor pieces:

Top 10 Fall decor Pieces:

1.Pumpkins

Nothing quite says fall like pumpkins. These faux decor pumpkins in this creamy white tone are perfect for a centerpiece or a grouping by a fireplace.

2. Rustic Signs

The fall is all about celebrating the harvest. Adding a rustic element is a great way to add a little country to your home.  I love rustic signs – they have a farmhouse feel ! This rustic fall themed sign would be a great piece to add instead of a wreath or add to a fireplace mantle display.

3. Wreath

The colours of fall are so spectacular and should be celebrated! This wreath is the perfect addition to a door or decorating a fireplace or styling a console table. I love the mix of colours and textures in this wreath!

4. Glassware

So not the typical ‘fall decor piece’ but these mason jar glasses are adorable! Mason jars are a great way to embrace a rustic look without going over board plus the messaging here is fall inspired – do you love pumpkin spice?

5. Chunky Knit Blanket

I am ALWAYS cold! True story. So blankets and throws are always a must when it comes to styling a sofa and in the cooler fall months, a chunky knit blanket is non-negotiable. I love the cozy elements and the softness of course, but the bulky knitted texture adds a great visual elements to any room! These chunky knit blankets are just gorgeous!

6.  Plaid

When the cooler weather arrives, the plaid flannel shirts start to come out – am I right? So add some plaid to your fall decor scheme. It works on beds, armchairs and of course, sofas. I love the simplicity of these Buffalo Check pillow covers. You can add plaid to your home decor in other ways, for some ideas – click here

7. Candles

So much about what I love about fall are the incredible scents – pumpkin, vanilla, apple, spicy, woodsy….I love them all. An Apple Cider candle adds another layer of cozy to any home during the fall months.  I love the scent of these handmade candles and I love the simple label, too!

8. Wood

I love dough bowls and not just because I have a weakness for fresh bread….I love them because I love that rustic character that they bring to a kitchen. Dough bowls are a perfect and simple way to display some mini pumpkins or apples during the fall months – set it out on a kitchen island or dining table. I love the simple design and imperfections of this dough bowl

letter-board

If you are Instagram, Facebook or really out anywhere you have likely seen Letter Boards everywhere! Right now, parents everywhere are using these letter boards to mark the first day of school…Not sure what I’m referring to? See the image below…..

So cute, right? I remember seeing these mainly at rec centers and churches but now they are everywhere….I really love the cute and funny messages that we see on social media feeds – but I think these would be a great teaching tool.  My 6 year old son is a busy boy. He is extremely tactile and is always using his hands.  He will be starting grade 1 in about 2 weeks and he’s already expressing nervousness about not being able to spell.  These letter boards would be a great tool for him – he gets that tactile element and we can practice letter recognition and get him spelling.  I have one on my amazon ‘wishlist’ (and will purchase once I get my back-to-school shopping done later this week).

I’m so not a fan of magnets all over my fridge – it’s so cluttered and messy looking so this is a great alternative, plus it’s super portable…..

SHOP LETTER BOARDS –

Like the idea of adding a letter board to your decor…I’ve done the ‘window’ shopping for you….and they are all under $30US … and for my Canadian friends, I have included links for you, too

I love this Grey felt letter board for a few reasons.  I love the size it’s 10 x 10 so it’s perfect for kids or just a cute sign for a coffee station or front entry.  And I love the colour grey (it’s a bit softer than black) and the oak frame – it’s perfect if you love that farmhouse look.

Grey Felt 10 x 10 letter board with 300 white letters from Amazon

Link to buy this in Canada, click here

This is the full set….this letter board is larger and a rectangular shape 12 x 18, comes with an easel and canvas bags for the letters – so smart.  I know this would be perfect for a wedding (greeting guests or table numbers). I also love this at an entry or on a wall instead of typical art – change it up with weekly quotes….

Black Felt 12 x 18 letter board with easel from Amazon

Link to buy this in Canada, click here

If you are like me – a bit torn on a grey or black board – problem solved! This letter board has 2 sides…one side is black and the other grey! Again it is 10 x 10 for perfect for a little vignette and again a great size for kids to use.

Double sided felt letter board from Amazon

Link to purchase this in Canada, click here

I know these are a bit of a trend right now but the teacher in me also sees the extra benefit for teaching kids spelling and letter recognition – I also think these could be a great item for a classroom – inspire your students with a weekly quote (maybe have each student pick a quote for the letter board….)

Where would you use a letter board?

turkish-towel-trend

If you have been browsing online on sites like Pinterest or Instagram you have probably noticed that Turkish towels seem to be everywhere….not sure what I’m referring to? Take a look at the image below…

So what is a Turkish Towel?

they are loomed with premium Turkish cotton which has extra long fibers. These towels are known to be fluffier, softer and more absorbent (even after multiple washings) because of the unique material. Personally, I like how light weight they are and that helps them dry out faster. Plus they don’t pill in the washer / dryer – for someone who does a lot of laundry, that’s a good thing!

Photo credit : Room for Tuesday

The above image from Room for Tuesday – is a perfect example of how adding a Turkish towel to your bathroom adds an organic touch to a space.  These soft beige and white Turkish towels are clean and so fresh looking – the tassels add that boho feel.  Take the tour of this bathroom reveal – it’s fantastic! And you can see how a small and simple piece can do so much for a room…

Some Turkish towels in grey and white tones were a perfect accessory in this model home – we decorated about 1 year ago – I love the way they drape, the soft tones and of course, how soft they are.

Shop Turkish Towels –

I love the simple stripe detail on this Turkish towel – the tassels add that boho vibe – don’t like beige? This towel comes in all sorts of great colours….Click for more details

Turkish towels aren’t just for the bathroom – they work great in the kitchen, too! Add a bit of ‘tassel’ detail to your kitchen with a set of Turkish dish cloths – like this set of 4 these also come in multiple colours…

You might think that Turkish towels only come in stripes but no, they are available in bolder colours and in patterns, too! I love this one for a beach blanket!

What do you think of this trend?
